Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant - Gastrointestinal Oncology

About the Role

In collaboration with a physician, the Oncology NP/PA manages outpatient care for acute and chronic problems associated with cancer, its treatment, and related conditions. Responsibilities include providing anticipatory guidance, patient and family education, and psychological and emotional support. The NP/PA has prescriptive authority, including Schedule II through V controlled substances in Massachusetts, and is a member of an interdisciplinary care team requiring effective communication and collaboration. The role demands critical thinking, research understanding, and leadership to improve care quality and advance nursing/medical practices. The NP/PA is encouraged to pursue learning opportunities to strengthen their knowledge base in support of the Institute’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values.

Responsibilities

• Manage outpatient care for acute and chronic oncology-related conditions.
• Provide anticipatory guidance, patient and family education, and emotional support.
• Exercise prescriptive authority, including Schedule II through V controlled substances.
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary care team and external institutions.
• Apply critical thinking and research principles to improve care quality.
• Demonstrate leadership to advance nursing/medical care within the work setting and community.
• Engage in continuous learning to support the Institute’s mission.

Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

• Authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts.
• Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
• Minimum of 24 contact hours beyond generic education in pharmacotherapeutics.
• Master’s degree in Nursing.
• Minimum of 1 year of oncology nursing experience or 1 year of Nurse Practitioner experience.
• Oncology Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
• Possession of Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Federal DEA numbers.
• Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred (e.g., OCN, AOCN, CPON, BMTCN, CPHON).

Physician Assistant (PA)

• Master’s Degree and completion of an AAPA/NCCPA accredited Physician Assistant Studies program.
• NCCPA certification and licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
• Current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses.
• Completion of 100 hours of CME every 2 years.
• Experience levels:
  • PA I: No professional experience required.
  • PA II: 2 years of qualifying professional Physician Assistant experience.
  • PA III: 5 years of qualifying professional Physician Assistant experience.

Pay

Salaries are determined by market pay structures, experience, skills, and qualifications.

• Physician Assistant: $126,000 – $283,000 based on years of relevant experience.
• Nurse Practitioner (union positions): $130,321.87 – $293,282.93 as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
