This PRN position is for an Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant (NP/PA) providing direct patient care in the Emergency Department, assigned to at least one site. Providers may also be credentialed to practice at additional emergency departments within the system, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Barnes West County Hospital, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Christian Hospital Northeast, Christian Hospital Northwest Healthcare, Barnes-Jewish St. Peter’s Hospital, and Progress West Hospital. Emergency Medicine Physicians are available on-site 24/7 at all locations. Our clinical sites offer a mix of academic and community settings with diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care, including obtaining patient history, performing assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, and managing acute and chronic conditions.
  • Develops and implements patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, and other care providers.
  • May bill for services covered by collaborative practice agreement.
  • Provides counseling and education to patients and families on disease management, prevention, and quality of life improvement.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of patient medical records; maintains required reports and statistics.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referrals; performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions as permitted by certification and state regulations.
  • Champions safety and quality of care for patients using ITB therapy, including serving as an expert in ITB pump management and developing educational programs.
  • Serves as a clinical expert in rehabilitation nursing, demonstrating autonomy in complex clinical situations.
  • Provides management services for clinical research study projects, including monitoring subjects and providing education.
  • Works in accordance with established policies, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement and process improvement activities to enhance patient care.
  • Engages in professional growth through educational programs, literature, and workshops.
  • Contributes to the advancement of the rehabilitation nursing profession through research, publications, and presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (required).
  • Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross; online certifications without skills assessment are not sufficient).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (online certifications without skills assessment are not sufficient).
  • For Nurse Practitioners:
    • Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
    • Advanced Practice Nurse licensure (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
  • For Physician Assistants:
    • Graduate of a PA program.
    • Current PA licensure in Missouri and/or Illinois (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
  • Additional certifications may be required based on specialty.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minor procedural skills (e.g., suturing, abscess drainage, basic splinting).
  • Emergency Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant certification or Certificate of Added Qualification in Emergency Medicine.
  • 2+ years of experience practicing in an emergency department setting.
  • Preferred certifications:
    • Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) – Illinois or Missouri.
    • Certified Nurse Practitioner – Illinois or Missouri.
    • Physician Assistant – Illinois or Missouri.

Pay

Salary range: $97,000.00 - $174,600.00 per year.
