About the Role

The Nurse Practitioner (NP), Acute Care delivers primary care to patients, including those in the complex and chronically ill population. Works collaboratively with their department of medicine specialty and any Inpatient unit (excluding Critical Care units such as NICU, PICU, CTICU, and ICU-credentialed physician patients). The NP may provide consultation within their specialty to patients in Critical Care Departments, Emergency Department, Outpatient settings, and more.

The NP provides comprehensive care, including physical assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation for patients and their families. The role also involves functioning as a clinical leader, consultant, and educator in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and all healthcare team members. The NP supports department philosophies and is evaluated by nursing and medical staff, performing under standardized procedures within acute care services per Medical Staff privileges.

This position typically operates in a 24/7 unit, with schedules that may include weekends, holidays, and shifts beyond Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver primary care to acute and chronically ill patients.
  • Collaborate with department of medicine specialty and Inpatient units (excluding Critical Care).
  • Provide consultation within specialty to Critical Care, Emergency Department, and Outpatient settings.
  • Perform comprehensive physical assessments, diagnoses, planning, implementation, and evaluation for patients and families.
  • Act as a clinical leader, consultant, and educator for healthcare team members.
  • Support department philosophies and adhere to standardized procedures per Medical Staff privileges.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree.
  • BLS for Health Providers (American Heart Association).
  • California RN License.
  • NP Furnishing License (California).
  • California Nurse Practitioner License.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Completion of mandatory RCHSD critical care NP orientation.
  • National NP certification, obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Successful completion of the credentialing process through Medical Staff Services.

For per diem roles only: Must adhere to department per diem availability requirements, which may include a minimum of 12 shifts per fiscal year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor certification (American Heart Association).
  • National Acute Care NP certification.

Pay

The current salary range for this position is $67.58 to $92.93 per hour. Rady Children’s Hospital conducts regular market reviews to ensure competitive compensation aligned with similar organizations in the nonprofit healthcare sector. The listed range reflects the expected hiring range for qualified candidates, with final compensation decisions based on experience, education, licensure, unique skillsets, organizational need, and internal equity.
