Join our specialized behavioral health nursing team and directly enhance the well-being and recovery of patients at Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), part of the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).
About the role
Provide nursing care for behavioral health patients within the nursing scope of practice. Collaborate with an interprofessional team to deliver excellence in patient care and treatment. Complete comprehensive, person-centered nursing assessments to develop individualized care plans for individuals managing acute psychiatric and substance use needs, focusing on stabilization and recovery goals. Provide direct patient care including education, counseling, medication administration, and documentation of treatment plans and ongoing interventions.

- Locations: 1000 Silver Street, Middletown, CT or 500 Vine Street, Hartford, CT
Schedule
- Full-Time and Part-Time positions available
- Shifts: First, Second, Third, and Weekends
- Note: Positions may be assigned to any unit/location and work schedule/shift throughout ASD and GPD
Pay
- Part-Time: $40.20 - $52.63/hour
- Full-Time: $83,918 - $109,884/year
- Second and Third Shift Bonus: $3,000 yearly bonus (pro-rated for part-time), after one year of service

Requirements
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- For out-of-state RN licenses: Review eligibility and documentation requirements for CT license by endorsement here
- Complete a CT DPH online application for licensure
- Request verification of out-of-state license(s) electronically through the Nursys® System
A comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, will be required upon a conditional offer of employment. All state employees must adhere to Connecticut's Policy for a Drug Free Workplace.
Responsibilities
- Independently implement the nursing process with individuals, including carrying out physician's orders regarding diet, medication, and treatment
- Perform assessments and change dressings
- Monitor and ensure quality care through observation and evaluation
- Report on physiological and mental health status of individuals
- Document nursing interventions on medical records
- Distribute and maintain records of controlled drugs, ensuring their security
- Instruct individuals, staff, and family members regarding treatments and nursing plans
- Respond to emergencies and maintain availability of medications and supplies
- Ensure cleanliness of equipment and environment
- Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of individual treatment or healthcare plans
- Formulate and implement nursing care plans
- Administer routine tests and conduct training
- Delegate nursing tasks consistent with established protocols
- Participate in psychotherapeutic and rehabilitation interventions
- Physically restrain individuals when necessary
- Provide related medical or mental health specialty services
- Serve as Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional, if applicable

CVH opened in 1868 as the State’s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness. Today, CVH is the largest of DMHAS facilities, including 17 inpatient units over two campuses (Middletown and Hartford). The hospital provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment, including specialized services for pregnant women, persons with dual diagnoses, geriatric and special services, young adults, and traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors.
