Join our specialized behavioral health nursing team and directly enhance the well-being and recovery of patients at Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), part of the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).

About the role

Provide nursing care for behavioral health patients within the nursing scope of practice. Collaborate with interprofessional team members to deliver excellence in patient care and treatments, including:

• Completing comprehensive, person-centered nursing assessments to develop individualized care plans for individuals managing acute psychiatric and substance use needs, focusing on stabilization and recovery goals.
• Providing direct patient care, including education, counseling, medication administration, and documentation of the treatment plan and ongoing interventions.
• Offering substantial input regarding patient care needs.

Positions are available at the Addiction Services Division (ASD) and General Psychiatry Division (GPD) on two campuses:

• 1000 Silver Street, Middletown, CT
• 500 Vine Street, Hartford, CT

Schedule

Full-time and part-time positions are available across all shifts, including weekends. Assignments may vary by unit, location, and shift within ASD and GPD.

Pay

• Full-time: $83,918 - $109,884/year (commensurate with education and/or experience).
• Part-time: $40.20 - $52.63/hour (commensurate with education and/or experience).
• Second and third shift positions: Eligible for an annual recruitment and retention bonus of $3,000 (pro-rated for part-time), after completing one year of service.

Requirements

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license. Out-of-state applicants without a multistate or compact license must apply for Connecticut licensure by endorsement. Review eligibility and documentation requirements here.
• Completion of a comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, upon a conditional offer of employment.
• Adherence to Connecticut’s Policy for a Drug-Free Workplace.

Note: Permanent DMHAS employees in the Nurse classification are not eligible to apply. Transfers within DMHAS will be handled through the agency’s lateral transfer process. Candidates hired from this posting may receive a temporary assignment initially, with a permanent assignment determined within the first six months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Independently implement the nursing process, including carrying out physician’s orders regarding diet, medication, and treatment.
• Perform assessments, change dressings, monitor and ensure quality care, and report on physiological and mental health status.
• Document nursing interventions on medical records and maintain records of controlled drugs, ensuring their security.
• Instruct individuals, staff, and family members on treatments, nursing plans, and related care issues.
• Respond to emergencies, maintain medication and supply availability, and ensure equipment and environmental cleanliness.
• Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team in assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating individual treatment or care plans.
• Formulate and implement nursing care plans; administer routine tests; conduct training; and delegate nursing tasks consistent with established protocols.
• Participate in psychotherapeutic and rehabilitation interventions, including physical restraint of individuals when necessary.
• Provide related medical or mental health specialty services, and serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional if required.

• Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment, including specialized services for pregnant women and individuals with dual diagnoses.
• Specialty programs for geriatric and young adult services, as well as an integrated network of mental health services for older adults.
• A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program addressing the needs of TBI survivors, including community reintegration, independent living skills development, vocational and educational training, psychiatric and cognitive assessment, speech and physical rehabilitation, and individual/family counseling.
