About the role

The Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse (RN) who provides leadership for the operational, financial, quality, and staffing functions of one or more inpatient units, ambulatory clinics, or clinical programs. This role is accountable for ensuring safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care that aligns with organizational goals and the Professional Practice Model. The Nurse Manager promotes a positive practice environment, staff engagement, professional development, and collaboration across interdisciplinary teams to achieve outstanding clinical, operational, and patient experience outcomes. The Nurse Manager differs from the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) in that the Nurse Manager holds primary accountability for operations, staffing, quality, and fiscal management for one or more inpatient or ambulatory units or clinical programs. The Nurse Manager operates with independent decision-making authority appropriate to the size, complexity, and scope of the assigned area(s), which may range from a single unit to multiple units or programs.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and executing strategic plans, goals, and performance measures that support organizational and nursing priorities.
  • Leading daily operations, patient care delivery, patient flow, and workflow coordination while fostering communication, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Managing budgets, productivity, staffing resources, and operational expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainable operations.
  • Recruiting, hiring, coaching, evaluating, and developing staff and emerging leaders while promoting engagement, recognition, and compliance with policies and professional standards.
  • Driving quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives through data-driven decision-making, evidence-based practice, risk reduction, and continuous learning.
  • Modeling ethical nursing practice consistent with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational values while supporting diversity, inclusion, staff engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • The Nurse Manager fosters a culture of excellence, safety, equity, and professional growth while ensuring high-quality patient outcomes and efficient clinical operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Two years of clinical nursing experience in a related specialty AND one year of recent relevant leadership experience (e.g., charge nurse, preceptor, supervisor, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex operations in a large, matrixed healthcare environment.
  • Unencumbered Oregon RN license required.
  • BLS for healthcare providers required.
  • Professional certification in nursing leadership (e.g., NE-BC, CNML) required within 2 years of hire.
