Nurse Manager - Interventional Radiology

At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care provided in the designated areas(s) of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration and participates in committees, representing unit and Nursing in a positive manner.

Responsibilities

People

  • Performs management responsibilities of selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees in the department.
  • Provides development and mentoring of staff; meets or exceeds threshold goal for department turnover.
  • Develops direct reports to perform management functions.
  • Conducts regular department meetings, rounds on employees, completes performance appraisals, and provides coaching/corrective counseling and recognition.
  • Provides timely guidance and feedback to strengthen knowledge/skill areas.
  • Facilitates and promotes effective team dynamics and teambuilding strategies; leads and facilitates department process improvements.
  • Meets or exceeds threshold goal for department and/or system metrics on employee engagement indicators.
  • Establishes effective two-way communication with staff, demonstrating active listening and supporting organizational goals.
  • Coaches staff on communication to maintain a team environment, including patient and family in the care plan.
  • Assists staff with stress management practices.

Service

  • Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, schedules, and activities to ensure high customer/patient satisfaction.
  • Drives department service standards to impact patient/customer-based satisfaction through role modeling and accountability.
  • Actively participates on entity committees as a department representative.
  • Serves as a role model, resolving concerns and conflicts effectively.
  • Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve patient care and service.

Quality/Safety

  • Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and revises the department safety plan and accreditation/regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitors and confirms staff maintain required credentials and competencies.
  • Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations and support performance improvement.
  • Employs a proactive approach to safe outcomes by monitoring workflow, reporting near misses/adverse events, and identifying solutions.
  • Role models situational awareness and adopts lean principles for process improvements.
  • Monitors compliance with policies, procedures, and System HR Standards of Practice.
  • Prepares measurable goals and objectives aligned with Houston Methodist priorities.

Finance

  • Assists in developing and managing the department budget to operate cost-effectively.
  • Manages/audits department expenses to meet budgeted/flex revenue and expense targets.
  • Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet patient care needs while ensuring cost-effectiveness.
  • Implements strategies to achieve financial targets, optimizing productivity and minimizing overtime.
  • Plans coverage to maximize management and staff presence.

Growth/Innovation

  • Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve operations.
  • Supports change initiatives and adjusts effectively to new work structures or processes.
  • Proactively evaluates processes and recommends sustainable changes.
  • Participates in developing and revising procedures.
  • Builds strategic relationships to achieve business goals.
  • Identifies developmental needs for self and staff and takes appropriate action.
  • Ensures career discussions and individual development plans (IDP) are completed and updated.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Three years’ experience in nursing, with one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare (for internal candidates, two years’ experience in nursing with demonstrated leadership abilities).
  • Prior experience in Interventional Radiology is highly preferred.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Texas State Licensure (Compact Licensure accepted; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor (AHA) certification.
  • ANCC Recognized Certification (Magnet) within one year of hire.
  • Preferred: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Instructor (AHA).
  • As required by department: NIH Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI).

  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills, including investigation, identification of causes, and development of corrective actions.
