Nurse Manager Birth Center - Evenings

About the Role

The Birth Center Nurse Manager works in collaboration with the Director and two other Nurse Manager colleagues to manage the quality, safety, cost-effectiveness, and consistency of patient care for the entire Birth Center, including OBED, Antepartum, Labor, OR, and Postpartum areas. This role serves as a resource to staff, physicians, residents, students, and others in an academic environment and oversees RNs, clinical staff, technicians, and Patient Care Assistants (PCA).

The Mission Bay Birth Center is a high-risk tertiary care unit with 9 OBED bays, 12 Antepartum Rooms, 9 LDRP rooms, 3 Operating rooms, and 24 Postpartum rooms, operating with an annual budget of $175 million. The Birth Center averages 220 births a month and collaborates with teams such as the Fetal Treatment Center, Pre-diagnostic Center, Oncology, and Cardiology. High-risk patients receive care through programs like MAPS, IUT, IUERT, and RAFT procedures.

This position reports directly to the Unit Director of the Birth Center under Women’s Health and Adult Services. The mission of the UCSF Department of OBGYN & Reproductive Sciences is to improve the lives and health of all women through excellence, innovation, and leadership in patient care, scientific discovery, education, and advocacy.

Responsibilities

• Promote an environment of teamwork and innovation for a shared voice in nursing practice while supporting evidence-based practices and refining patient care outcomes.
• Oversee staff selection, human resource management, performance improvement goals, educational needs, and staff recognition.
• Display effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving to achieve mutually established goals.
• Continuously monitor patient care and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to improve quality and patient safety in alignment with National Patient Safety Goals, JCAHO, and infection control standards.
• Develop and enhance systems to ensure critical instrumentation and equipment is readily available for the unit and OR.
• Proactively carry out the mission, vision, and values of UCSF Medical Center.
• Consult and collaborate with healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care management.
• Serve as a resource to staff, physicians, students, and others.

Requirements

• Minimum of five (5) years of RN experience in high-risk Labor and Delivery.
• Minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services.
• Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events, and ability to problem-solve with critical thinking skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision-making.
• Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (required).
• Registered Nurse in the State of California (required).
• Current American Heart Association BLS Certificate (required).
• Current NRP Certificate (required).
• Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant area (preferred).
• Certification in a relevant area (preferred).

• Strong leadership, fiscal, and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines.
• Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives.

Salary placement within the range is dependent on factors including work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
