The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a professional, registered nurse who serves as a skilled communicator, collaborator, and authentic leader. The ANM supports the execution of the nursing strategic plan and priorities, participates in unit and hospital decision-making, and provides meaningful recognition to others. This role provides operational and administrative support to nursing leadership, coordinating staffing, throughput, quality and safety outcomes, staff competency, hiring, clinical and staff corrective actions, and other departmental activities to uphold the mission, vision, and values of Hackensack Meridian Health.

The ANM, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, assesses, plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates nursing practice and the nursing care delivery system with direct supervision of front-line staff.

Responsibilities

Leadership/Human Resource Management

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the ANM:

  • Participates in recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Assists with unit huddles and leader rounding with employees.
  • Participates in unit goal creation reflective of hospital goals and the mission and vision of Hackensack Meridian Health.
  • Leads or participates in evidence-based practice projects or research when appropriate.
  • Leads or participates in unit-based or hospital-based shared governance committees or councils.
  • Resolves conflicts and facilitates constructive resolutions and positive outcomes.
  • Completes employee corrective action plans/counseling as necessary.
  • Adheres to HMH’s Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Prepares and conducts periodic performance evaluations for assigned staff members.
  • Contributes to and/or monitors the unit orientation process for all roles as necessary.
  • Participates in and models the importance of employee recognition.
  • Models cultural competence, social justice, and fairness, and capitalizes on generational diversity to foster highly effective work groups.
  • Escalates nursing labor/management issues where applicable.

Financial Management

The ANM collaborates with the Nurse Manager for efficient fiscal management of departmental activities to ensure proper utilization of hospital resources:

  • Participates in payroll, staff scheduling, and daily staffing needs.
  • Assists in the management of the department budget.
  • Monitors business intelligence for the unit.
  • Maximizes care efficiency and throughput.
  • Understands the relationship between value-based purchasing, quality outcomes, revenue, and reimbursement.
  • Monitors unit staffing productivity and flexes staff accordingly.

Quality and Safety/Performance Improvement

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the ANM will:

  • Optimize the patient and family experience of care.
  • Lead multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Ensure unit-based performance improvement monitoring is completed, trended, and reported internally and externally.
  • Lead or participate in quality improvement projects.
  • Lead or conduct root cause analysis investigations.
  • Assure unit regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in staff education and competency.
  • Serve as a role model to others and mentor new employees and new Charge RNs.

General Job Functions

  • Interprets, supports, and communicates policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Serves as a role model for staff in all aspects of nursing (e.g., professionalism, quality care).
  • Assists in identifying cost containment measures by evaluating alternative product utilization within the department.
  • Serves on-call based on unit requirements.
  • Assumes special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of an associate degree in Nursing or diploma in Nursing.
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
  • National Certification acceptable to the Magnet Recognition Program and appropriate to your current specialty (within two years of hire).
  • BSN in progress and/or willing to acquire within three (3) years of hire (applies to team members hired on or after February 2025). Note: Advanced master’s degree in nursing programs satisfy the BSN requirement (e.g., Associates to MSN).
  • Minimum of 3 years of recent nursing experience in respective specialty or equivalent.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs, a strong sense of accountability for improving the lives of patients and caregivers, an exceptional focus on teamwork, dedication to ongoing education, and the ability and passion to deliver the highest quality of care based on patient focus.

MSN preferred. Supervisory or charge nurse experience preferred.
