About the role

Student Health Services (SHS) is the primary student health unit on the University of Delaware campus. SHS provides essential services and support to students and campus stakeholders to enhance personal and social responsibility and foster safe, healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtains detailed health histories and performs physical assessments on a selected patient population; treats acute/chronic medical problems, per physician-approved protocols.
  • Utilizes the Electronic Medical Record for scheduling of appointments for patients, charting of encounters and any other documentation regarding the care of the patient.
  • Reviews medical records including laboratory results. Notifies the primary provider, as appropriate.
  • Provides patient education and instructions within area of specialty to patients, families, health care staff, faculty and students.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • Maintains supplies in areas of work, i.e., exam rooms and the procedure room.
  • Evaluates equipment readiness, such as EKG machine, nebulizer, pulse oximeter, vitals machines, glucometer, crash carts and contents and other items as needed.
  • Participates in clinical quality improvement studies.
  • Affords assistance with training of new staff, medical residents and nurse practitioner students.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, maintaining current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Acts as a liaison between SHS and University of Delaware departments, staff, parents, and community.
  • Establishes and maintains verbal and written communications with other members of the health team.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • State of Delaware Licensed Registered Nurse (or RN licensed in a compact state), and minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Ability to react effectively in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures, CPR, emergency medical procedures, patient care charts, and patient histories.
  • Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, proper administration, and primary care principles and practices.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments and making administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures, as well as JCAHO or AAAHC accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Must maintain professional competence through participation in ongoing educational programs with other members of the healthcare team and with other departments of the University and the community.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to lift average-weight objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Annual tuberculosis screening. If positive, proof of absence of disease is required.
  • Documentation of immune status to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Hepatitis B.
  • Successful completion of criminal background check.
