About the Role

A Nurse Extern at HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital offers hands-on experience as part of the nursing team, helping you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll deliver safe, compassionate care while building skills and confidence to take on advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Responsibilities

• Provide essential care for patients, including assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as competency grows.
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates with the nursing team to ensure seamless patient care.
• Help patients and families understand care plans and offer guidance for health and recovery.
• Maintain clean and safe patient areas by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and keeping the environment organized.
• Engage in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and partner with supervisors or preceptors to build a personal career development plan.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an approved RN Program.
• Successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing course.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider certification.
