NURSE EXTERN - MED/SURG 4E

About the Role

The nurse extern works closely with our professional healthcare team to deliver compassionate patient-centered care. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor, the nurse extern develops confidence in critical thinking and prioritization while sharpening clinical skills needed to launch a successful nursing career. The role focuses on developing clinical judgment and problem-solving techniques based on current Standards of Care, the Nurse Practice Act, and Methodist Hospitals' mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic patient care tasks such as measuring and recording vital signs (height, weight, intake/output), mobility, nutrition, hygiene, comfort, and environmental interventions.
• Assist in infection prevention measures and patient safety interventions.
• Contribute to therapeutic procedures under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor.
• Participate in developing the patient’s interdisciplinary plan of care.
• Provide education to patients and family members regarding patient care.
• Accurately document all patient care activities in the Electronic Medical Record per Methodist policy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Diplomacy in interactions with patients, family members, visitors, and staff.
• Flexibility to meet unanticipated demands and priorities.
• Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in crisis situations.
• Ability to use the nursing process for problem-solving in the role.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled student in good academic standing in an accredited School of Nursing or a Nurse Graduate who has completed an accredited School of Nursing and is preparing for the NCLEX.
• If currently enrolled, must have successfully completed Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing (or its equivalent) didactic and lab.
• Current school registration or proof of graduation required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) credentials.
• Nurse Graduates must secure Indiana licensing within 60 days of graduation.
