About the role
Nurse Externs follow the same employment guidelines as other staff, including attendance and tardiness policies.
Responsibilities
- Work 24 hours (2 shifts) per pay period
- Report to the Charge Nurse at the start of each shift
- The Charge Nurse will seek out a preceptor based on learning opportunities
- Nurse Externs engage actively with the assigned preceptor to provide patient care, including assessments, assistance with ADLs, toileting, and feeding
- Nurse Externs complete skills under the supervision of their preceptor, providing copies of completed skill checklists
- Rotate through the following areas for the first 6 months: ICU, IMC, UC, PU5 North, 6 North, 7 North, NETE
- In the last 6 months, Nurse Externs are assigned to the unit of their choice (if possible)
Requirements
- Student nurses can be hired as Nurse Externs
- ADN: upon completion of Nursing Fundamentals
- BSN: during senior/last year of the nursing program
