About the role
The D.S. Chen Health and Wellness Center serves the Deerfield Academy community. This is a full-time, benefited position during the academic year.
Schedule: four evening shifts per week (Monday–Thursday, 2:30 PM–10:30 PM) plus one weekend a month (Saturday & Sunday, 2:30 PM–10:30 PM).
Responsibilities
- Provide excellent, individualized health care and education to Deerfield students and employees.
- Follow written and/or verbal orders from the Health Center Physician (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) according to nursing standards of practice.
- Independently recognize emergency situations and initiate appropriate intervention and treatment, including sending students to the hospital and calling for extra help as needed.
- Maintain a high level of nursing care, adhering to professional nursing standards and Health Center policies, procedures, and Standing Orders with emphasis on clinical safety, quality, and effective communication.
- Provide a professional, compassionate approach toward all students, their families, employees, and others involved in student health and well-being.
- Comply with all HIPAA policies and regulations.
- Document thoroughly and appropriately in the Health Center’s electronic medical record system.
- Draw blood, call in prescriptions, dispense medications, administer immunizations, and perform other medical procedures and tests as ordered by the MD/NP.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred, from an accredited school.
- 1–3 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably with adolescents in a health care setting.
- Valid Massachusetts RN license.
- Current BLS certification.
- Effective communication and decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to be flexible and work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to work with a wide range of people in a diplomatic and professional manner.
- Proficiency with computers, MS Office suite, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
- Ability to manage and maintain sensitivity to highly confidential information.
Physical Demands
- Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal and reports.
- Ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, reach, feel, and hear.
- Ability to frequently bend and lift.
- Ability to stand and sit for sustained periods of time.
- Ability to climb stairs.
- Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to occasionally push/pull up to 200 lbs.
Working Conditions
The nurse works in an outpatient medical clinic as well as an inpatient infirmary. Occasional exposure to biohazardous materials and body waste.
