About the role

The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is seeking to fill one (1) full-time Nurse position in the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Training (BET).

Responsibilities

  • Fire Department infection control
  • 911 abuse/misuse management
  • EMS policies and procedures
  • Pharmaceutical purchases and storage
  • Administration of required annual vaccinations to all personnel
  • Weapons of mass destruction and CHEMPACK program
  • Public health preparedness and emergency response planning
  • Aid in strategic planning as it relates to EMS in San José and Santa Clara County
  • Manage, monitor, track, and evaluate all reported exposures and illness of Department personnel during emergency response
  • Monitor, prepare, and plan for infectious disease pandemic outbreaks
  • Serve as the Department Infection Control Officer (DICO)
  • Serve as the Department Exposure Control Officer (DECO)
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Department's Community Paramedicine Pilot Program, including patient outreach, care coordination, health education, collaboration with healthcare and community-based partners, and program evaluation activities

Requirements

  • Education: Diploma in nursing (Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing).
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience in Occupational Health or Public Health nursing.
  • Licenses or Certifications: Possession of a valid certificate as a Registered Nurse in the State of California, and biannual renewal.

Qualifications

  • Job Expertise: Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional nursing principles and practices, departmental procedures and policies, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and communicable disease management.
  • Knowledge of occupational health, employee wellness, and medical surveillance programs.
  • Knowledge of public health preparedness, emergency response planning, and healthcare system coordination.
  • Knowledge of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems and operations.
  • Knowledge of Community Paramedicine, Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH), care coordination, or similar patient-centered healthcare delivery models.
  • Experience with common computer applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Communication Skills: Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills; displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.
  • Decision Making: Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions.

  • Computer Skills: Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.
  • Desirable Competencies: Knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following areas: Infection control and communicable disease management, Occupational health nursing and employee health programs, Public health nursing and population health initiatives, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems and operations, Community Paramedicine and Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) programs, Care coordination, case management, and navigation of healthcare and community-based resources, Emergency preparedness, public health response, and medical surge planning, Vaccination and immunization programs, OSHA-related medical surveillance and regulatory compliance, Program development, implementation, evaluation, and quality improvement, Collaboration with healthcare providers, hospitals, public health agencies, and community organizations.
