Responsibilities
- Participate as a member of the school health services department to provide health services to all students;
- Maintain a daily log of all student and staff visits to the health room;
- Maintain emergency information for students and staff, and record communications with parents, staff, and community agencies;
- Use assessment skills to identify students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems, and communicate these health needs to parent or other relevant school personnel;
- Interpret the health needs of children to parents, and assist families in utilizing community resources to meet their children’s health needs;
- Promote an awareness of the influence of curriculum, policies, activities and stress levels on the mental health of students and staff;
- Involve staff, students and parents in maintaining a healthy school environment;
- Promote standard safety practices and procedures in school buildings and on school property;
- Provide a school health program which is educational in nature, and where every health situation is utilized as a learning experience for students, parents and staff;
- Administer medication to students as requested by parents or physicians according to the medication guidelines;
- Provide for safe storage of medications, and reliable administration and recording of all doses given;
- Provide health information and input as requested, in the development of 504 and IEP plans;
- Develop IHPs (Individualized Health Plans) for students, as necessary;
- Oversee and ensure the timely delivery of all state-mandated health reports as required by NYSDOE (New York State Department of Education) and the Department of Health, including compilation of student health data;
- Ensure compliance with New York State immunization requirements and student health examination mandates;
- Carry out required health screenings;
- Monitor communicable diseases and report required information to the Westchester County Department of Health, New York State Department of Health, NYSED, and other required agencies;
- Participate in school safety planning and emergency preparedness activities;
- Cook up and coordinate referrals to healthcare providers and community resources.
Qualifications
- Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License required;
- Knowledge of NYSED and NYS Department of Health regulations;
- Associates degree in Nursing (ADN) (required);
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) (preferred);
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification;
- Work experience in a K-12 environment.
- Experience as a School Nurse preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to follow established policies and procedures;
- Able to communicate efficiently and clearly;
- Spanish speaker (proficient) preferred.
