About the role
The Pre-Admission Nurse works under the direct supervision of the Surgical Services Manager. This role involves obtaining pertinent medical history with the patient prior to admission via a phone interview, collecting the patient's medical history from previous records, and working closely with the anesthesia department to coordinate patient needs.
Responsibilities
- Practice appropriate telephone and patient triage skills, balancing quality care with efficient use of time and resources.
- Obtain pertinent medical history of the patient, either in person or via telephone, and communicate information to appropriate team members.
- Ensure pre-operative care requirements of patients are accomplished through the nursing process.
- Perform patient teaching/education as per department protocols.
- Review pertinent information, implement, and document interventions and evaluate results.
- Maintain and promote patient safety by reviewing and observing physical and psychological needs and communicating information to appropriate team members.
- Respond to telephone inquiries regarding the caller's expressed needs.
- Perform outbound follow-up calls as requested.
- Provide general health information and special physician’s orders.
- Refer callers to appropriate resources including medical/ambulatory care, hospital services, and community services within established procedures and guidelines.
- Thoroughly document all call encounters utilizing manual and/or online information systems at the time of the call.
- Alert anesthesia of results of labs, prescribed medications, or special needs of individual with medical problems prior to the date of surgery.
- Answer inquiries in a timely and helpful manner.
- Communicate arrival time and NPO (nothing by mouth) instructions to patients as prescribed.
- Document and report incidents according to procedure.
- Knowledgeable in surgical procedures, medications, anesthesia techniques to answer patient questions and give appropriate pre-operative instructions.
- Provide pre-operative instructions and emotional support to patient, family, and significant other.
- Communicate appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesia department concerning patient care.
- Complete patient charting in an accurate, concise, and timely manner.
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize patient needs.
- Attend staff meetings, educational, and safety programs.
- Participate in quality improvement activities as requested.

Qualifications
- Education and/or Experience: Minimum of a Diploma in Licensed Practical Nursing. At least 6 months to 1 year experience working as an LPN.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Maintains current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensure in the State of Ohio. Maintains current BLS.
