Responsibilities

This position is an integral part of the healthcare setting, focusing on patient and messenger escort services. The incumbent will:

  • Receive assignments from designated supervisors and transport patients to and from Nursing Services and other areas for specialized treatment and examinations.
  • Obtain patient escort assignments from a Dispatcher/Supervisor and report to the Nurse-in-Charge. Introduce yourself to the patient, explain the nature of the trip, and escort them to designated areas until responsibility is transferred.
  • Transport patients via wheelchair, stretcher, bed, or stretcher-bed, including those with intravenous apparatus, to various units such as nursing, x-ray, therapies, clinics, diagnostic and therapeutic units, transfers, discharges, religious and recreation centers, and accompany children to school within the healthcare setting.
  • Maintain control of patients’ charts and release them only to authorized personnel.
  • Record patient transport activities, including pickup time, arrival time at specified areas, and return time to Nursing Service.
  • Assist in placing patients in and out of wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and morgue trays, obtaining assistance when necessary.
  • Position patients on tables in areas such as x-ray and physical therapy, and use Hoyer lifters and other patient lifting devices.
  • Escort newly-admitted patients to designated areas and assist them with storing luggage, packages, clothing, and other items.
  • Transport bodies to the mortuary, assist with mortuary tasks, complete required reports for D.O.A.’s, transport specimens (e.g., fetus, amputated parts) to the morgue, and deliver specimens, charts, and x-rays to specified areas.
  • Maintain the ready availability, upkeep, and cleanliness of wheelchairs, stretchers, stretcher beds, and morgue trays. Sterilize incoming patients’ clothing and other items when required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, such as collecting and delivering requisitions for diagnostic tests and treatments, assisting with transporting equipment and supplies, and other messenger tasks.

Requirements

  • Elementary school graduation or equivalent ability to effectively communicate with patients.
  • Ability to keep simple clinical records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Ability to read and comprehend Patient Transport requests from a Rover transmitted by the EPIC (electronic transport system).
  • Skill: Clear communication with patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability: Safely maneuver patients in wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds, and transfer patients between these and exam tables or beds.
