Responsibilities
- Assist the nurse with various duties, including placing specialty mattresses when applicable.
- Perform proper glucose testing and record results accurately and timely.
- Participate in the Falls Prevention Program and identify patients at risk for falls.
- Practice wound prevention protocol and proper use of PPE.
- Maintain universal precautions and patient confidentiality.
- Avoid discussing patients or hospital business in public areas such as cafeterias, hallways, or elevators.
- Perform and record patient weight, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, and pulse in a timely manner.
- Administer complete/partial baths, oral care, denture care, hair care, foley care, shaving, and bed making.
- Demonstrate knowledge of patient restraints and ensure patient safety.
- Assist in toileting needs, place bedpans, empty collection devices (foleys), and record patient intake and output accurately.
- Maintain an organized and clean workspace, completing assignments in a timely manner.
- Perform postpartum care.
- Communicate accurately, both verbally and in writing, and maintain a harmonious work environment.
- Safely transport patients via wheelchair and/or stretcher.
- Answer phones promptly and courteously.
- Transport specimens to the lab and record in the logbook.
- Prepare patients for meals, assist when needed, serve fresh water daily, and provide snacks as needed.
- Answer patient call lights promptly, respond to patient needs, and provide quality care.
- Collect specimens (urine, sputum, stool), label specimen containers, and place them in biohazard bags.
- Position patients, use LYCO lift, transfer patients from bed to chair, and assist with ambulation using proper body mechanics.
- Perform EKGs and document when performed.
- Report all abnormal findings to the assigned nurse or charge nurse.
- Perform hourly rounding on patients to ensure needs are met and patient safety is upheld.
- Notify the assigned nurse when taking breaks or meals.
- Demonstrate competency with enemas when assigned.
- Manage supplies to avoid bringing excessive items into patient rooms.
- Act in the role of patient sitter.
- Adhere to standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
- Identify the needs of the patient population served and modify care accordingly (e.g., culture, hearing, or visually impaired).
- Perform all other assigned duties.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- 6 months to 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting.
Qualifications
- BLS certification (AHA approved).
- HIPAA competent and compliant.
