Core Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing care to youth, observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress of clinic out-patients.
  • Make nursing rounds; take and record initials.
  • Interview youth to obtain comprehensive medical histories.
  • Instruct patients regarding health maintenance, wellness, and self-administered medications.

Safety, Monitoring, and Emergency Response

  • Congestively monitor restrained patients (e.g., lockups, detention, isolated).
  • Provide immediate medical attention to emergencies, including administering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Evaluate emergency situations; counsel patients on the need for medical referral; contact the staff physician when necessary; arrange immediate transportation to hospital emergency rooms.

Clinical Operations and Physician Support

  • Assist physicians in the evaluation, treatment, and care planning of patients; assist with physical examinations.
  • Collect and test diagnostic specimens; administer vaccinations and medical injections (e.g., insulin, allergy).
  • Schedule doctor appointments and arrange out-patient clinical appointments with specialists (e.g., dentists, psychologists).
  • Prepare examination room; stock supplies; sterilize equipment.
  • Complete all required reports (e.g., incident reports, accident reports).
