We are seeking a Nuclear Reactor Controller (Reactor Operator) for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). This role combines naval nuclear ratings into one position, making it suitable for nuclear-trained MMs, EMs, ETs, and personnel with commercial nuclear operations experience. The position reports to a HFIR Shift Supervisor within the HFIR Operations Section, Research Reactors Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and maintain certification as a nuclear reactor controller (reactor operator).
  • Follow operational practices and requirements as outlined in DOE Order 422.1, Conduct of Operations.
  • Maintain safe and efficient operation of the HFIR in accordance with procedures and regulations.
  • Monitor plant parameters in real-time for assigned stations, analyzing trends and plant conditions.
  • Operate the reactor, support systems, perform water sampling, disassemble and reassemble reactor components, and conduct refueling and defueling operations.
  • Conduct tours, log taking, and other activities throughout the plant and in the control room.
  • Perform field work to support reactor operation, including waste generation and packaging, crane and mobile equipment operation, inventorying and stocking materials, and radiological decontamination.
  • Function under high-stress conditions requiring immediate decision-making and rapid actions with seamless team coordination.
  • Adhere to Safe Conduct of Research principles, ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, and considering hazards for every task.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 3 years of nuclear experience (two years may be nuclear/non-nuclear power plant experience).
  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Program.

Special Requirements

  • A pre-hire physical will be required after offer due to various physical demands and working conditions.
  • This position requires access to technology subject to export control; candidates must qualify for such access without an export control license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Department of Energy L clearance, including passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program (WSAP).
