Nuclear Medicine Technologist- Specialist

About the role

This role is responsible for performing advanced diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures in compliance with established quality and safety standards. This role ensures accurate radiopharmaceutical preparation, administration, and imaging while prioritizing radiation safety for patients and staff.

Responsibilities

• Verifies physician order and procedure to ensure accuracy
• Uses radiology information systems to facilitate safe patient care
• Explains procedure to patient to ensure understanding
• Independently operates equipment to complete imaging procedure according to protocol (including placement of IV and administration of radiopharmaceuticals)
• Reviews patient images prior to transmission to ensure images meet diagnostic quality standards
• Works in partnership with the supervisor to enhance safety protocols, ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies such as the NRC, FDA, and OSHA
• Leads educational sessions on USP825 guidelines and their application for Nuclear Medicine to ensure all staff adhere to USP825 standards for radiopharmaceutical compounding and handling
• Continuously researches and educates the Nuclear Medicine Team on new radiopharmaceuticals, their applications, and therapeutic protocols including in-service sessions on emerging technologies and procedures
• Audits all therapy documents, ensuring all protocols are followed
• Daily checks for cleaning procedures in the Hot Lab
• Weekly temperature log printouts of refrigerator
• Regularly reviews compounding records for accuracy, especially in procedures like gastric emptying and RBC tagging
• Provides onboarding and training in compliance with Ochsner Ambassador program and serves as a preceptor for new team members
• Provides training and support for technologists involved in research studies, ensuring they understand research-specific procedures and protocols
• Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions, and communication style
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all policies and standards

Requirements

• Completion of an approved nuclear medicine program
• 3 years Nuclear medicine experience
• Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or equivalent body as recognized by the American College of Radiology (ACR), or Intersocietal Commission Accreditation Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL)
• Unlimited license in state of practice (if applicable)
• Basic Life Support - BLS
