Nuclear Medical Technologist

About the Role

The Nuclear Medical Technologist operates a variety of Hot Lab equipment and diagnostic Nuclear Medicine imaging equipment to obtain images for interpretation by Radiologists, adhering to As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles. This role may also assist physicians with the administration of therapeutic radionuclides. The position is primarily based at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital (Ypsilanti, MI) with potential scheduling at Livingston Hospital in Brighton.

Schedule

• Full-time, 40 hours per week
• Day Shift with weekend and holiday rotation
• On-call rotation until 10 PM

Responsibilities

• Receive patients and explain procedures before and during exams.
• Observe patient condition for relevant information (e.g., coherence, ability to comply, pregnancy, physical contraindications).
• Calculate radionuclide activity and prepare appropriate dosages of radiopharmaceuticals.
• Perform quality control procedures to ensure pharmaceutical quality before administration.
• Maintain sterility and integrity of radiopharmaceutical compounds.
• Prepare imaging devices and administer radiopharmaceuticals via intravenous, oral, or inhalation methods.
• Perform standard Nuclear Medicine imaging procedures (dynamic, static, SPECT, and SPECT-CT).
• Monitor and maintain patient ancillary equipment (e.g., supplemental oxygen, IV lines).
• Observe patients for status changes and follow intervention protocols or notify appropriate staff.
• Prepare specialized radiopharmaceuticals for in-vitro or in-vivo labeling.
• Prepare and transport patient blood samples for radiolabeling by outside vendors.
• Report excessive radiation exposure to the Authorized User, NM Manager, and Radiation Safety Officer.
• Handle receiving, processing, distributing, and storing radioactive materials.
• Check radionuclide shipments for contamination per radiation safety procedures.
• Dispose of radioactive material and waste according to departmental and regulatory policies.
• Assist in maintaining inventory of laboratory and medical supplies.
• Maintain ventilation mouthpieces, including cleaning, packaging, and sterilization.
• Perform quality control procedures on all instruments (e.g., voltage, linearity, uniformity, resolution checks).
• Conduct minor routine preventative maintenance on equipment and initiate vendor service calls for repairs.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technologist program or Associate in Applied Science degree.
• Registration as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• One year of Nuclear Medicine experience preferred.
• Proficiency in venipuncture, quality control procedures, and operation of Hot Lab and NM imaging equipment.
• Strong working knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
