Nuclear Instrument & Control Tech Apprentice-Shift

About the role

Under direct supervision during shift work, performs skilled routine and multitask tasks in the laboratory, shops, and field—both in normal and radiological areas of the plants. Responsibilities include installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and testing of equipment associated with electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation & control systems.

Responsibilities

• Complete the scheduled Instrument & Control Technician Apprentice-Shift Training Program.
• Perform scheduled maintenance, calibrations, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation and controls, reactor protection, and associated equipment.
• Maintain and calibrate microprocessor, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic instrumentation and control systems.
• Verify and comply with Equipment Clearances and Radiological Work Permits for Instrument and Control maintenance work.
• Maintain proper operation of control systems through diagnosis, correction, maintenance, and calibration.
• Complete initial, continuous, on-the-job, and refresher training as outlined in the I&C Technician Apprentice-Shift Training Program.
• Maintain calibration and maintenance work areas for portable radiation monitoring equipment.
• Keep I&C shops, job work sites, test equipment issue areas, and lab equipment in a safe, orderly, and neat condition.
• Assist other groups in support of safe operations and maintenance of the nuclear site.
• Accurately complete all documentation required for assigned job tasks.
• Comply with regulatory and site procedures, including the Site Emergency Plan and Technical Specifications.
• Assist in maintenance, calibrations, and troubleshooting within reactor containment and other radiological areas during all modes of plant operation.
• Perform “pre-critical checkout” of reactor controls and instrumentation as directed.
• Set up test equipment and assist engineers in conducting tests of station equipment.
• Maintain and calibrate area, process, and portable radiation monitoring systems and equipment.
• Assist in rigging and handling of I&C-related equipment and materials.
• Assist computer personnel with board component-level repair, I/O module hardware calibration, soldering, wire wrapping, and cable lug terminations.
• Perform maintenance on reactor control rod drive and control equipment.
• Assist in modifying control panels, both electrically and mechanically, for new or different installations of instruments and controls.
• Perform multitask and other related work as assigned or directed.

Requirements

• Two-year post-high school relevant education or equivalent experience in an applicable field, as deemed appropriate by Maintenance Management.
• Pass the Instrument and Control Technician Apprentice qualification test and EEI Standardized test.
• Complete initial, continuous, on-the-job, and refresher training to progress to first-class technician as outlined in the I&C Training Program.
• Demonstrated work knowledge of electronic equipment and circuitry, and some familiarity with magnetic amplifier equipment.
• Reasonable familiarity with basic theories of mechanical instrumentation and control and their application in nuclear power stations.
• Familiarity with physical/dimensional measurement techniques and methodologies.
• Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and control circuits.
• Ability to interpret simple sketches, prints, and written instructions.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply company safety regulations, policies, and practices.
• Capable of passing and maintaining applicable discipline eye examination standards.
• Reasonable familiarity with electrical and mechanical physical/dimensional measurements.
• Reasonable familiarity with digital electronics and microprocessor-based technology.
• Physically able and willing to utilize protective clothing, respirators, or other equipment essential for nuclear power plant maintenance, including containment entries.
• Able and willing to work in elevated or confined quarters and in radiation fields.
• Physical ability to carry a minimum of 50 pounds of tooling, test equipment, and plant equipment.
