About the role
Sells general merchandise to customers exercising professional selling techniques. Works as part of a sales team to provide service which anticipates and exceeds customer expectations. Assists in all aspects of ensuring full operation of the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar.
Responsibilities
- Greet and engage customers in conversation for purposes of providing sales related assistance.
- Assist in the selection of merchandise, and suggest additional items to complement the customer's selections.
- Offer customers the opportunity to purchase extended product warranties, explaining coverage, benefits, and price.
- Interact with customers and coworkers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Become knowledgeable regarding merchandise, including proper set-up, use, care, characteristics of various product price points, and warranty coverage.
- Communicate product-related information to customers knowledgeably and legibly.
- Ensure assigned areas are fully stocked, and merchandise is neatly arranged.
- Communicate with supervisor, store manager, etc. regarding stock additions, deletions, fast and slow selling merchandise, customer preferences, needs, and problems.
- Participate in department meetings and actively seek to exchange ideas regarding improvements in customer service, job performance, and achievement of store/department sales goals.
- Complete sales transactions efficiently, thank customers for their patronage, and perform cash register transactions accurately and procedurally correct.
- Advise customers of upcoming sales events and services available throughout the Navy Exchange.
- Offer customers the opportunity to open a NEXCARD account and inform customers of NEXCARD account benefits.
- Become knowledgeable in NEX store policies, including Richter Merchandising System functions and operation, merchandise returns, price matching, check cashing, rain checks, etc.
- Handle customer returns and problems tactfully and efficiently, applying store policies consistently and intelligently to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Maintain a high level of awareness in assigned areas and offer excellent customer service to all patrons to deter theft.
- Unpack, stage, and move merchandise as assigned, assist in creating store displays, and perform periodic inventories.
- Complete paperwork associated with merchandise/inventory movement, price adjustments, customer returns, and cash register operation accurately and completely.
Requirements
- Eligible for and participate in applicable commission and gainsharing sales incentive programs.
- Required to lift up to 25 lbs. as it relates to job duties, including assisting customers, lifting merchandise, and assisting with stocking sales area as necessary.
- May be required to perform duties specific to Minimarts operating a Food and Beverage Convenience Bar, including opening and closing the bar, ensuring all equipment is turned on/off, preheating and displaying products, replenishing products and condiments, and cleaning small wares/equipment.
- Monitor the temperature on refrigerators and freezers a minimum of 3 times daily to ensure equipment is maintaining required temperature.
- May be required to attend a 4-hour food safety training session initially and an annual refresher thereafter.
Qualifications
No experience required. High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
