NPI Manufacturing Engineer - Control Electronics
About the role
IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ) is the world's leading quantum platform and merchant supplier, delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. The company’s newest quantum computer, the IonQ Tempo, has helped customers such as AWS and AstraZeneca achieve 20x performance results and set a world record in 2025 with 99.99% two‑qubit gate fidelity. Headquartered in College Park, MD, IonQ operates globally and provides quantum services through major cloud providers. This Manufacturing Engineer – New Product Introduction (NPI) role is based onsite at the College Park headquarters, with up to 10% travel. As an NPI Engineer you will serve as a critical link between design teams, in‑house production, and external manufacturing partners, owning all control electronics subsystems from an NPI and Manufacturing Engineering perspective to improve designs, develop scalable processes, and support a robust NPI pipeline.
Responsibilities
- Work with technicians and other engineers hands-on, building and testing prototype hardware, with an emphasis on the assembly and testing of electromechanical components.
- Leverage expertise in New Product Introduction (NPI) to seamlessly transition our control electronics subsystems from prototype to production, optimizing for manufacturability, cost, and supply chain scalability.
- Collaborate with electrical and mechanical design engineers to provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Assembly (DFA), and Test (DFT) feedback, ensuring products are optimized for efficient manufacturing processes.
- Engage in design reviews and the examination of deliverables necessary for a Technical Data Package for our electronics assemblies.
- Develop process flows, breaking down large, complex assemblies into a logical part flow of subassemblies and sub‑processes.
- Develop, improve, and document manufacturing processes for successfully manufacturing and testing control electronics hardware, including detailed assembly instructions, test procedures, and standard operating procedures.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with design engineering, quality engineering, and supply chain teams to resolve manufacturing challenges.
- Support system-level integration and bring-up of control electronics, including device configuration, loading control software and drivers, and troubleshooting hardware/software interface issues.
- Apply Configuration Management best practices to hardware designs and manufacturing processes.
