NP/PA Radiation Oncology

About the Role

In collaboration with a physician, the Oncology NP/PA manages outpatient care for patients undergoing radiation therapy. The NP/PA is responsible for acute and chronic problems associated with disease, treatment, and related conditions, providing anticipatory guidance, patient and family education, and psychological and emotional support. The role includes prescriptive authority for schedule II through V controlled substances in Massachusetts.

The NP/PA is a member of an interdisciplinary care team, requiring effective communication and collaboration with co-workers at the Institute and collaborating institutions. The role demands critical thinking, an understanding of research principles, and leadership to improve quality of care and advance nursing/medical practices. This position includes weekend rotation coverage.

The APP in the Department of Radiation Oncology collaborates closely with radiation oncologists, nursing staff, radiation therapists, and administrative personnel to support comprehensive care. The role involves performing independent clinical assessments, managing treatment-related care, providing patient and family education, and facilitating coordination of multidisciplinary oncology care.

Responsibilities

• Manage outpatient care for oncology patients in collaboration with a physician.
• Address acute and chronic problems related to disease, treatment, and conditions.
• Provide anticipatory guidance, patient and family education, and psychological/emotional support.
• Exercise prescriptive authority, including schedule II through V controlled substances.
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary care team, including external institutions and agencies.
• Perform independent clinical assessments and manage treatment-related care.
• Facilitate coordination of multidisciplinary oncology care.
• Engage in critical thinking, research principles, and leadership to advance care quality.
• Participate in weekend rotation coverage.

Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

• Authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts.
• Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
• Minimum of 24 contact hours beyond generic education in pharmacotherapeutics.
• Master’s degree in Nursing.
• Minimum of 1 year of oncology nursing experience or 1 year of Nurse Practitioner experience.
• Oncology Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
• Possession of Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Federal DEA numbers.
• Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred (e.g., OCN, AOCN, CPON, BMTCN, CPHON).

Physician Assistant (PA)

• Master’s degree and completion of an AAPA/NCCPA accredited Physician Assistant Studies program.
• NCCPA certification and licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
• Current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses.
• Completion of 100 hours of CME every 2 years.
• Experience levels:
  • PA I: No professional experience required.
  • PA II: 2 years of qualifying professional experience.
  • PA III: 5 years of qualifying professional experience.

Pay

Salaries are determined based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications, with ranges reflecting market pay structures and internal equity.

• Physician Assistant: $126,000 – $283,000 per year.
• Nurse Practitioner (Union Positions): $125,000 – $283,000 per year (based on a 40-hour workweek and NP Steps 1-21).
