Per diem night coverage for the Neurosurgery Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Riverview Medical Center, and Ocean University Medical Center. This role assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients under physician supervision in a Neurosurgical ICU setting.

The Neurosurgery Program at Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute offers advanced treatment options for neurological conditions, consistently ranking among the best in the state. Key features include:

  • Focused ultrasound (FUS) for essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease tremor at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, one of only three locations in the institute offering this minimally invasive treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, consistent with education, training, and experience.
  • Perform and document accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments tailored to the patient’s age, gender, and clinical problem.
  • Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants.
  • Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and treatment modalities.
  • Prescribe medication safely and effectively, adhering to best practices, hospital policy, and New Jersey regulations, while providing patient education.
  • Promote Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) APP practice recognition through conferences, publications, and presentations.
  • Deliver patient- and family-centered care that is compassionate and effective for health promotion and disease treatment.
  • Practice according to Medical Staff rules, bylaws, and delineation of privileges.
  • Apply evidence-based and value-based medicine to analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes.
  • Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, focusing on resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self-management for chronic conditions.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to the specialty.
  • Translate "best practice" into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care.
  • Provide culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health management education to patients and families.
  • Facilitate coordinated care and clear communication among the healthcare team through daily interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Serve as a patient/family advocate, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as needed.
  • Act as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team, addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups.
  • Adhere to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes.
  • Promote a collaborative work environment aligned with the organizational mission, values, and pillars.
  • Mentor other APPs, precept students, and participate in educational programs as a clinical expert.
  • Identify patient/family educational needs and collaborate to implement appropriate teaching materials.
  • Promote innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice.
  • Participate in clinical research activities and disseminate findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications.
  • Identify and address ethical care issues through interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Comply with HMH and department-specific scope of services, policies, and procedures.
  • Adhere to all HMH infection control and safety policies.
  • Complete medication reconciliations as appropriate.
  • Participate in annual APP peer review.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to support nursing-led protocols.
  • Facilitate and participate in nursing educational programs as a clinical expert.
  • Adhere to the legal framework and scope of practice defined by the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

For Physician Assistants:

  • Successful completion of an approved physician assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
  • Physician Assistant License.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • BLS (Basic Health Care Life Support) HCP Certification.
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.

For Acute Care Nurse Practitioners:

  • Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program.
  • Master's or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
  • Advance Practice Nurse License.
  • Board certification by AANP or ANCC.
  • BLS (Basic Health Care Life Support) HCP Certification.
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.
  • Maintains clinical competencies through continuing education and clinical practice.
  • Experience in a relevant patient care setting (or as regulations dictate).
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Prescriptive authority through CDS and DEA registration according to New Jersey state law.
  • Collaborative agreement with physicians on staff.

For Both Roles:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Pay

The posted rate of pay is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act. The starting rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer.

Schedule

  • Per diem night shifts.
  • Inpatient setting with rotating weekends.
