About the role

Transform healthcare by diagnosing and treating human disease, illness and injuries while practicing evidence-based medicine. Prescribe medically necessary medications and treatments. Serve on various Carilion and/or hospital committees. Complete necessary documentation for patients' health information records. Deliver high-quality, compassionate medical care.

Responsibilities

  • Examine patients using various medical equipment, instruments and tests.
  • Order or perform various tests, analyses and imaging to provide information on patients' conditions.
  • Diagnose patients' conditions based on examination results, tests and reports.
  • Prescribe and administer drugs, treatments and vaccinations.
  • May perform perinatal care, deliveries, surgeries and related invasive procedures.
  • Work closely with case management, nursing, and the medical staff to ensure all patients have an appropriate plan of care and ongoing care coordination.
  • Support Joint Commission continuous readiness and compliance.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives through collaboration with hospital management, the medical staff, and employees in areas such as equipment and supply standardization, medical resource management, and the application of evidence-based medicine.
  • Complete all required documentation timely and accurately.
  • Report births, deaths, and contagious diseases as required.
  • Conduct, cooperate, support, and collaborate on basic and clinical research.
  • Develop and test new medical techniques.
  • Supervise medical treatment of patients.
  • May supervise physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, medical residents, medical students, and/or office staff.
  • Participate in teaching and mentoring activities.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Completion of residency training in an approved program.
  • Experience in evidence-based medicine and patient-centered care.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and diagnostic procedures.
