About the Role

This field position provides daily school bus transportation for students to and from school and home in accordance with school district contract requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all applicable federal and state regulations regarding operation of commercial vehicles and school buses.
  • Safely operate a non-CDL school bus van on an assigned route as directed, demonstrating courtesy and professionalism.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections as required by DOT and school bus regulations; report mechanical defects to shop personnel.
  • Maintain, read, and understand route sheets, including time changes; adhere to scheduled route times and mileage. Notify supervisor of changes or delays immediately.
  • Maintain control of student passengers at all times to ensure safe vehicle operation; record and report discipline problems through district-established procedures.
  • When transporting special needs or exceptional children, manage student care and behavior within guidelines established by the state School Bus Driver Manual and individual school districts.
  • Report all vehicle and passenger accidents or incidents to your supervisor promptly and comply with company accident response procedures.
  • Report work-related injuries to supervisor and comply with company workers’ compensation procedures.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Comply with company procedures regarding vehicle keys, lock boxes, and video cameras.
  • Attend training and safety meetings as required by federal and state regulations and the company.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and orderly daily; fuel the bus in accordance with terminal standards.
  • Operate vehicle communication systems within company policy guidelines.
  • Report all personal motor vehicle violations to supervisor as required by DOT regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student personal and medical information.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be the required state age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have a satisfactory motor vehicle record, criminal history record, and child abuse history record.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to read and understand traffic signs and signals, road maps, and route schedules.
  • Must successfully complete skills and classroom training.
  • Ability to effectively manage student behavior in a non-confrontational manner.
  • Ability to manage vehicle and student emergencies calmly and appropriately.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for 4-6 hours per day.
  • Vision adequate for reading traffic signals and signs, maps, and schedules.
  • Hearing adequate for general traffic conditions, traffic signals, emergency vehicles, and monitoring and using vehicle communication equipment.
  • Repetitive use of hands, arms, and legs for operating vehicle controls.
  • Range of motion adequate for safe operation of commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to climb steps of the bus.
  • Ability to reach overhead and to shoulder height, and to push or pull to clear the vehicle of ice and snow.
  • Ability to bend and stoop to conduct vehicle inspections and properly secure wheelchairs.
  • Ability to push and pull with up to 40 lbs. of force or meet state requirements.
  • Range of motion and sufficient mobility to safely evacuate passengers, including accessing emergency exits via the aisle of the vehicle.

This job is considered Safety-Sensitive and incumbents are subject to random substance, drug, and alcohol testing.
