Night Custodian
Reports to: Building & Grounds Director
Full-time, non-exempt position (40 hours/week). Salary and benefits as outlined in the Custodian Collective Bargaining Agreement.
About the Role
The Night Custodian cleans and maintains assigned school facilities, coordinating with the Buildings & Grounds Director, school administrators, teachers, support staff, students, parents, and the community.
This is a full-time, 12-month position. When school is in session, the regular work day is 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (eight consecutive hours including a 30-minute meal period). When school is not in session, the regular work day is 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Hours may be adjusted with notice to improve operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning and janitorial duties in common areas, classrooms, offices, cafeterias, computer labs, break rooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, hallways, entryways, gymnasiums, and exterior grounds.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and cafeteria.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance, such as replacing light fixtures or unclogging pipes.
- Conduct limited grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming lawns and hedges, and removing snow from sidewalks.
- Ensure heating and cooling systems are operational.
- Maintain a neat and orderly janitor’s room; stock cleaning and maintenance supplies.
- Wash windows.
- Inspect the school for safety hazards and report deficiencies to the Director, Principal, or School Resource Officer.
- Carry and respond to a cellphone or two-way radio during assigned shifts.
- Set up, tear down, and clean after activities; move and arrange furniture and equipment as requested.
- Interact with students, staff, visitors, and groups during and after school hours to address building use needs.
- Receive, document, and coordinate building permits.
- Respond to last-minute requests, unscheduled events, and changes regarding building use.
- Collaborate daily with the Director and Principal to resolve issues, schedule work, plan projects, inspect the building, and coordinate activity needs.
- Monitor and inspect the building daily for safety and cleanliness; make minor repairs and report maintenance needs to the supervisor.
- Notify the building supervisor of hazardous or harmful situations.
- Secure the facility daily by locking doors, windows, and setting alarms; monitor building security throughout the shift.
- Report supply and equipment needs to the Director; perform daily preventative maintenance on custodial equipment.
- Ensure proper use, identification, mixture, and application of chemicals.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks to ensure safe egress.
- Comply with energy conservation procedures daily.
- Perform special cleaning and assist with renovation projects; operate large cleaning equipment and assist with floor maintenance and restoration.
- Respond as essential personnel during emergencies, weather events, or school/district closures.
- Attend work as scheduled and arrive on time.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least one year of custodial experience preferred.
- Customer service experience preferred.

- Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
- Ability to keep the school clean and orderly.

- Operating knowledge of all major custodial equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Able to navigate all areas of the school quickly, including indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the school and classrooms.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull.
