NICU Clinical Pharmacist- Full Time Days

Location: Fayetteville, North Carolina – Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Pharmacy Department

About the role

Responsible for demonstrating clinical and operational knowledge and expertise in the assessment, treatment, and care of patients. The clinical pharmacist implements and maintains clinical rounding services, completes medication orders, and provides target medication dosing consults for designated teams. Assists with orienting and training new employees and serves as a preceptor for residents and students.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive patient medication order evaluation, checking for problems with dosages, interactions, and incompatibilities
• Prepare and dispense medication orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures, and protocols
• Review and interpret culture and susceptibility data for antibiotic appropriateness and recommend changes as necessary
• Assist with pharmacokinetics consult services and drug dosing per organizational protocols
• Detect and report suspected adverse drug reactions and medication errors accurately and in a timely manner
• Document all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely
• Demonstrate efforts to improve patient satisfaction, lower costs, improve quality, and promote safety
• Develop working relationships with pharmacists, attending physicians, medical residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare team members
• Create a sustainable rounding schedule to provide clinical pharmacy services to patients as part of the medical team
• Perform work within specific time frames and adapt positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload or schedule
• Demonstrate sound professional judgment consistent with clinical and academic background
• Supervise residents, students, and co-workers
• Maintain professional development requirements set by ASHP to be a qualified preceptor
• Develop and implement quality improvement measures to improve patient care and staff efficiency
• Precept, evaluate, and mentor pharmacy learners, including PGY1/PGY2 pharmacy residents and PharmD students
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Doctor of Pharmacy Degree required
• Licensed Pharmacist by North Carolina Board of Pharmacy (NCBOP) required, or eligible to become licensed by NCBOP
• Board Certification preferred
• 1 year of post-graduate training (e.g., ASHP-Accredited PGY1 Residency) or equivalent clinical experience required
• PGY2 in an acute care setting, equivalent practice experience, or PGY1 Residency plus 3 years of clinical experience preferred

• Knowledge of Pharmacy laws (state and national)
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments to ensure timely pharmacy services
• Punctual and dependable; reports to work as scheduled and fulfills on-call obligations

Physical Requirements

• Ability to see and read physician orders, medication labels, etc.
• Manual dexterity to use a computer and typewriter, compound prescriptions, and prepare IV admixtures
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and patients
