About the role
The Baler Operator reports to the Facilities & Operations Supervisor or the Terminal Operations Manager. This position is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of the baler while ensuring compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. The role operates under flexible parameters with the primary goal of achieving excellence in all facets of the position to provide the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Process products through the baler to shape, form, and compress materials.
- Strictly adhere to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards to provide a safe environment for employees, customers, and visitors.
- Adjust machine components to regulate speeds, pressures, temperatures, amounts, dimensions, and flow of materials.
- Perform equipment inspections and submit related reports to the appropriate supervisor.
- Conduct pre- and post-processing inspections of materials to verify conformance with company and industry standards, completing all required documentation.
- Select and install machine components such as dies, molds, and cutters according to specifications using hand tools and measuring devices.
- Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.
- Report all equipment deficiencies or malfunctions requiring maintenance or repair to the proper supervisor.
- Support the company’s Internal Control process by understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls, and suggesting improvements to policies and procedures.
- Communicate upward any problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
Requirements
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Understanding of raw materials and quality control to maximize effective production.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions with exposure to physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt.
- Must wear safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, face shields, and additional personal protective equipment as needed.
- Ability to handle multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance under pressure, with adaptability to critical deadlines and unpredictable workloads.
- Extra hours may be required, including weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
Physical Activities
- Sit rarely; stand and walk frequently on uneven ground and throughout the yard.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds consistently.
- Push and pull occasionally when moving materials.
- Crouch or bend at the knees consistently to move or access materials or equipment.
- Stoop or bend at the waist consistently to move materials.
- Reach at arm’s length and overhead frequently.
- Twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually.
- Climb occasionally when obtaining items.
- Handle, grasp, and manipulate materials constantly; arm-hand steadiness required for precision work.
- Communicate by speech and hearing continually.
- Visual acuity needed for close detail work.
- Mental dexterity required to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness.
Job Conditions
This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to equipment, machinery, and scrap materials. Travel is not required.
