About the role

The Associated Press is seeking three (3) part-time, temporary newspersons for its Regional Sports Desk. These positions require writing, editing, and rewriting sports stories covering both professional and college leagues. Candidates must be proficient in communicating with various sources, including AP staff members, stringers, and Sports Information Directors.

Responsibilities

• Write, edit, and rewrite sports stories using Pronto and other AP and third-party automated systems.
• Collaborate with a team of journalists, reporters, and editors to produce high-quality sports content.
• Work under deadline pressure to meet publication requirements.
• Communicate stories that are engaging and suitable for sharing on social media and other platforms.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time news experience as a news assistant or researcher in a news bureau or regional desk.
• Strong knowledge of sports (professional and college).
• Proven interpersonal, organizational, and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Self-directed and capable of working effectively in a fast-paced production environment.

Qualifications

• Home computer (PC or Mac) and access to Wi-Fi is required.
• Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Annual salary for Class A staff ranging from $53,477 to $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience.
