News 12 Multimedia Journalist - Freelance

About the Role

News 12 is an award-winning, hyper-local news station covering communities throughout Long Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester, Hudson Valley, Connecticut, and New Jersey. News 12 New York is our national streaming service for regional news, weather, and original content. We are seeking an assertive, self-starting Freelance Multimedia Journalist committed to delivering high-quality news and storytelling with a hyper-local lens.

Responsibilities

• Generate story ideas, develop sources, maintain contacts, and pursue leads.
• Produce and present stories and other content for all platforms, including social media.
• Shoot, write, and edit clearly and creatively.
• Operate assigned camera and editing gear.
• Gather information, video content, interviews, and other elements necessary to produce thorough, high-quality news reports.
• Maintain deep familiarity with hyper-local news events to generate original stories.
• Represent News 12 positively in the community in a courteous and professional manner.
• Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
• Respond to breaking news and urgent newsroom situations as required.
• Write web/digital copy for all stories.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications preferred; Master’s degree is a plus.
• One year of full-time professional news reporting experience preferred.
• Ability to work independently in a one-person band, backpack, multimedia environment.
• Ability to edit on non-linear systems (e.g., Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere).
• Knowledge of local and national current events, newsmakers, and issues.
• Knowledge of libel laws and ethical foundations of journalism.
• Excellent news writing ability for all platforms, including social media.
• Proficiency in writing web/digital copy for all stories.
• Proficiency in current and emerging newsgathering and production technologies.
• Ability to think quickly and respond appropriately in high-pressure situations.
• Ability to create work that is unique, imaginative, and original.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing.
• Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver up to 40 lbs.
• Ability to work inside a climate-controlled office/studio environment and outside in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, humidity, and wet conditions.
• Flexibility to work any assigned shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, or longer shifts due to breaking news.

Pay

The starting pay range for this position is $57,802.00 – $94,960.00 per year, based on skills and experience.
