About the role

The newcomer classroom assistant collaborates with the classroom teacher(s) to provide native language support for newcomer students in the core classroom to support comprehension of academic content. Assists with the implementation of the teacher's instruction plan and serves as a link to connect students, staff, and families.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with classroom teacher(s) to provide native language support and instructional assistance in all subject areas for newcomer students.
• Assists teachers in preparing materials, administering tests, and handling paperwork/documentation as needed.
• Implements the teacher's instruction plan and assists students with classroom activities.
• Performs tutoring, both individually and with small groups, to ensure comprehension of academic content.
• Serves as a link between the school and family, providing supplemental interpreting and translation services for multilingual students and families.
• Encourages classroom teacher(s) to be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences of students.
• Helps students build a positive self-image and view their culture and themselves with pride.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including lunchroom/playground duty.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in English as well as a second language (varies by school location/need, e.g., Spanish or Dari/Pashto/Farsi).
• Criminal background check required for hire.
• First Aid certification preferred.
• Must complete position-specific training (~15 hours/year) and, within 3 years, a District-administered Training Program (~30 hours).

Pay

Hourly rate: $19.81–$25.04 (Grade G4, Step 1–Step 9). Newly hired employees start at Step 1; advancement to Step 8 is based on previous experience.

Schedule

20 hours per week (0.5 FTE), 9 months per year.
