About the role

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurology seeks a full-time Staff Nurse to provide exceptional patient care in the Neurology Outpatient Clinic. The Staff Nurse will focus on the General/Stroke/Cognitive/Neurointerventional Surgery (NIS) patient population, assessing their nursing care needs, evaluating the effectiveness of care provided, and leading the nursing team.

Responsibilities

  • Incorporate scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles into clinical practice.
  • Adhere to and support departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patient responses to health and illness.
  • Absorb patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plans.
  • Develop and coordinate transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain a safe environment.
  • Evaluate patient's response to multidisciplinary care using evaluation data to revise and implement changes.
  • Assume accountability for the provision of care for patients.
  • Participate as a member of the healthcare team utilizing effective communication skills.
  • Contribute to the development of unit, division, department, and hospital policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing strategic planning processes.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of computer applications.
  • Develop and implement patient/family teaching plans based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient.
  • Evaluate and document the effectiveness of patient/family teaching.
  • Participate in the orientation of new nursing staff and ongoing education of nursing personnel.
  • Participate in formal and informal teaching with health care students.
  • Participate in research utilization activities.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and function as a patient advocate.
  • Remain calm and constructive in conflict situations.
  • Provide recognition and support for colleagues.
  • Comply with UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including following established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors, and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance, and punctuality.

Qualifications

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum of 1-year inpatient nursing experience.
  • Experience working with Neuroscience patient population.
  • Ambulatory Nursing experience.
  • Nursing Certification.

Schedule

Full-time
Schedule: 8:30am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday
Late Rotation: Participates in one closing shift per week to ensure patient care needs are met prior to and at clinic close.
No Call, No Weekends, No Holidays
