The purpose of this role is to provide high-quality electroencephalogram (EEG) studies on patients throughout the hospital, including but not limited to EMU, ICU, and outpatients as requested. The role also requires monitoring long-term EEGs (ICU and/or EMU) for abnormal activity and notifying appropriate parties immediately per hospital policy. The technician is proficient in the care and diagnostic testing of neonatal (birth to discharge), adolescent (12–17 years), adult (18–65 years), and geriatric (66 years and older) patients.

Responsibilities

• Assess and prioritize daily workload, communicating with peers to divide and prioritize tasks.
• Evaluate patient testing needs based on patient history and physician orders; clarify orders with physicians or patient floors as needed.
• Measure each patient’s head using the International 10/20 system of electrode placement.
• Prepare electrode sites using appropriate cleansing medium and apply electrodes with the correct medium.
• Check impedance to ensure it is <5 K Ohms and record impedance on the recording.
• Recognize age-related EEG patterns for adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
• Utilize special filters and paper speed settings to enhance abnormalities.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and correct artifacts in a timely manner to produce quality recordings.
• Ensure the integrity of electrodes and the recording system, including troubleshooting cable telemetry issues.
• Demonstrate proficiency in performing Evoked Potentials (SSEP, median and tibial), VEP, BAEP, EMU, and continuous EEG monitoring.
• Follow sterilization and universal blood/body fluid precautions.
• Complete appropriate documentation of studies per departmental policy, including timely and accurate patient charging.
• Perform patient assessments, including physical assessment, fall risk, skin integrity, evidence of abuse/neglect, and pain assessment.
• Monitor EEG and video data continuously, notifying nursing staff and physicians of abnormalities as detected.
• Work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• Assist in performance improvement activities, identifying issues and suggesting improvements.
• Support departmental physicians and medical students in patient testing as needed.
• Attend and participate in departmental staff meetings, offering input for departmental improvement.
• Follow proper communication channels for concerns or ideas.
• Support all hospital and departmental goals.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Maintain ongoing certification, including required continuing education units (CEUs).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Minimum of 6 months of experience performing EEGs, with experience in Evoked Potentials, EMU, and/or Intraoperative Monitoring, or 6 months of experience as a Monitor Tech.

Qualifications

• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in science or a health-related field.
