This position is a limited-term, at-will assignment not to exceed three years, with medical, dental, and defined-contribution retirement benefits similar to regular employees.
About the role
Design, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the County’s enterprise network, including network security, routing, switching, wireless LAN, WAN, VOIP, Virtual Private Networking, and network infrastructure testing and repair. Provide technical and functional direction to lower-level staff and project-based training.
Responsibilities
- Define, design, and implement system infrastructure and solutions.
- Evaluate and respond to user requests for assistance with telecommunications, wireless, and network systems via phone, in person, or remotely; diagnose hardware, software, and operational issues; train users on software and hardware usage.
- Implement new systems, programs, hardware, and software upgrades.
- Maintain and enforce policies and procedures for telecommunications and network administration.
- Document and communicate problem resolutions to departmental staff.
- Collaborate with vendor representatives to resolve hardware and software malfunctions and perform enhancements.
- Maintain hardware and software inventory; procure and manage replacement parts and supplies.
- Write and maintain user and technical documentation; provide training and best-practice guidance to users and technical staff.
- Coordinate activities with other information services staff; serve as technical lead on assigned projects, including requirements gathering, vendor coordination, installation, configuration, testing, and documentation.
- Provide updates and status reports to staff and users via voicemail, email, or in-person communication.
- Install, configure, and maintain systems; monitor and evaluate system performance.
- Participate in an on-call rotation after working hours.
Requirements
- Advanced network infrastructure engineering, configuration, installation, and maintenance.
- Management of Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies and security, including adjacency/convergence protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP), IP traffic redistribution, and route filtering.
- VPN setup and troubleshooting (IPSec, GRE), ACLs, and VLAN configuration management.
- Experience with Aruba Wireless managed environments, including ClearPass, AirWave, and controllers.
- Configuration and management of network monitoring and alert systems (SolarWinds experience desirable).
- Technical writing and diagramming for use-case documentation and standard operating procedures.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical path includes:
- Coursework or training in information systems, computer science, or a related field.
- Two years of increasingly responsible experience in network-specific technical support, installation, maintenance, and repair.
Preferred Knowledge
- Arista switching environment and CloudVision.
- HPE/Aruba switching and routing.
- SD-WAN technology (Silver Peak experience ideal).
- Cradlepoint and Cradlepoint NetCloud Manager.
- Firewalls (Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, or equivalent).
- F5 or compatible load-balancing technologies.
- Network security design.
- UPS connectivity and installation; power distribution for network appliances.
- Cloud datacenter support.
- DNS, DHCP, and IPAM.
- Network management platforms (e.g., SolarWinds).
Skills and Abilities
- Perform technical support for network systems; troubleshoot and resolve issues or escalate as needed.
- Identify, diagnose, and repair equipment, hardware, and software problems.
- Install and configure software and equipment.
- Provide high-level customer service to staff and vendors; communicate tactfully and effectively.
- Prioritize and manage a high volume of service requests.
- Learn and apply relevant Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and procedures.
- Organize, maintain, and update records and documentation.
- Operate modern office equipment and specialized software.
- Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships.
- Train staff on system and equipment usage.
- Interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with policies, laws, and regulations.
- Organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Physical Demands
- Mobility to work in an office setting, operate standard office equipment, and visit various County sites.
- Vision to read printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
- Finger dexterity for typing, operating equipment, and performing minor repairs.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with proper equipment; push and pull up to 100 pounds with proper equipment.
Work Environment
- Office environment with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature.
- Occasional interaction with upset staff during support situations.
