Network Engineer II

About the Role

Perform functional and technical Network Information Systems support for the City of Albuquerque's enterprise network. This includes planning, developing, installing, and maintaining communications infrastructure such as wireless networks, LAN, MAN, WAN, VoIP, remote enterprise installations, troubleshooting, network management system administration, and network security. The position involves network, video, and phone-related projects, including recommendations for network and security products and configurations. Candidates must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of network hardware, software, and troubleshooting skills, and work with minimal supervision while providing status reports and project updates.

Responsibilities

• Plan, forecast, design, implement, and manage the City's enterprise network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, wireless environments, and peripherals such as IP cameras, wireless access points, and VoIP equipment.
• Monitor and tune the City's enterprise network for optimal performance and security, including scheduling maintenance and creating reports from historical data.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks to ensure minimal network and phone downtime, including system and security health checks and hardware reviews.
• Respond to and troubleshoot system problems for enhanced performance; resolve user issues.
• Contact vendors for components, technical references, quotes, and services required for network expansion and maintenance.
• Document changes, additions, deletions, and revisions to network components, wiring, and facilities; prepare status reports as required.
• Participate in evaluations of proposed network hardware to ensure compatibility with existing systems.
• Ensure adherence to security policies and guidelines for network access and protection of the City's information resources; manage user access.
• Write detailed documentation of requirements, develop solutions, and present them, including product, licenses, software, installation quotes, hardware setup, and configuration.
• Design and implement the City's network information management system; develop procedures for network system operations, control, and recovery.
• Perform complex preventive maintenance tasks to preclude major network issues; create reports, charts, and other materials from historical data.
• Assist with project management duties for City construction or remodel projects, including preparing cost estimates, justifications, requests for proposals, evaluating bids, and recommending vendor selections.
• Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in computer network engineering.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in management information systems, computer science, or engineering.
• Two (2) years of experience in network, VoIP, or wireless communications.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
• Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from the date of hire.

Additional Requirements

• When assigned to Aviation, must successfully qualify for and maintain a Sunport Access Control Card as determined by the policies and guidelines of the Aviation Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
• Successful completion of a security background check conducted by U.S. Customs & Border Protection, if applicable.

Working Conditions

Work environments include offices, computer rooms, and telecommunications rooms, with exposure to computer screens. The role may require working at multiple sites, occasional exposure to noise, cold temperatures, and inclement weather, and driving between locations.

Physical Requirements

• Maintain physical condition necessary for sitting or standing for prolonged periods.
• Ability to lift equipment in excess of 50 pounds.
• May be required to work from substantial heights (e.g., catwalks, roofs, ladders).
