Job Summary
The Network Engineer installs, configures, and maintains a segment of the Granite School District Local Area Network in 8-10 schools/locations. The Engineer maintains network hardware, software, and monitors network devices to ensure network availability. Performs necessary maintenance to support network availability and efficiency.
Essential Functions
- Analyzes, isolates, and troubleshoots complex hardware, software and network issues including applications errors, hardware/software errors, communication errors, network address conflicts, etc.
- Performs on-site support tasks to install, upgrade, replace, repair, re-configure and/or troubleshoot device or software configuration issues, network switches, access points and computer wiring connections, etc.
- Installs, troubleshoots, upkeeps, maintains, and repairs access point devices and connectivity of switches to the backbone network infrastructure.
- Designs, installs, maintains, configures, implements, and administers local area network (LAN).
- Maintains LAN infrastructure documentation and architecture design including wireless documentation and site map.
- Determines needs of LAN environments (e.g. bandwidth, locations, number of devices, etc.) and makes recommendations to improve network performance.
- Configures network switches and workstations for network access; assigns internet protocol (IP) addresses and monitors network security.
- Deploys and maintains District server operating systems and their services and monitors and reviews system uptime to ensure functionality of systems.
- Operates and maintains a variety of desktop and network operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Mac OS, iOS, etc.
- Operates and maintains a variety of network management software including Identify Service Engine (ISE), Cisco Prime, Hyper-V, Forefront Identity Manager, Network Analyzers, etc.
- Manages Microsoft Windows server updates, upgrades, and replacement including configuration and data migration processes.
- Manages system migrations including email, software licensing, single sign on integration, data collection, and upload.
- Prepares and operates mobile device management including OS, software, and connectivity of all District devices.
- Works with departments attaching internet of things (IoT) devices to the network.
- Maintains user network share data, printer permissions, and maintenance.
- Maintains District directory services (e.g., Microsoft Active Directory, Google G Suite, etc.), user provisioning, maintenance functions, and problem resolution; creates system/user provisioning scripts; creates users and groups and establishes file access levels using automated account creation processes (e.g. FIM).
- Manages servers used for software installation and computer re-imaging; creates, updates, maintains or removes software installation template contents for provisioning and imaging computer systems; creates, tests, and implements new computer images for refreshing and/or re-imaging computers.
- Configures and maintains Skype for Business services, including servers and other hardware.
- Provides technical support to end users and mid-level support users; provides training and understanding on how to use the technology; provides user support and troubleshooting for phone system (e.g. Telephony, Skype for Business, etc.).
- Sets up, programs, and installs phones for new and existing District personnel; maintains and tracks accurate phone numbers assigned to individuals; updates phone switches and phone systems documentation; moves phones to new locations as requested.
- Maintains database of all District phones including assigned users, phone numbers, phone types, phone locations, etc.
- Maintains District-wide phone network for issues in connectivity and performance; ensures District staff have access to phone network, voicemail, email, instant messaging, and video conferencing functions.
- Keeps current on technology industry trends and best practices.
Required Knowledge And Skills
- Skilled in installing and managing Cisco access points and managing HPE/Aruba switches.
- Experience with IPV4 networks and DNS/DHCP services.
- Skilled in diagnosing network issues with a protocol analyzer.
- Skilled in troubleshooting Windows 10 Desktop OS and desktop applications.
- Experience using Microsoft Active Directory and GPOs.
- Experience using Microsoft File System access rights.
- Experience managing Windows and Mac devices with Ivanti Unified Endpoint Manager.
Required Education And Qualifications
- Requires one of the following: Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited university in Information Technology or related field; or four (4) years of equivalent, work-related experience.
- Requires one of the following: CompTIA Network +; or Cisco CCNA; or Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert (MCE); or Willingness to obtain one of the above certifications within three (3) years of hire.
- Requires a valid driver's license.
Required Prior Experience
- Six (6) years of equivalent, work-related experience or combination of education and work-related experience preferred.
