Network Engineer

About the role

Galapagos Federal Systems LLC is seeking a Network Engineer III to support a large Government client with multiple locations. This position focuses on maintaining industry and government IT compliance standards, ensuring production systems are secure, optimized for performance, and properly integrated with Wide Area Networks (WANs). The role involves collaboration with system integration network architects, stakeholders, and end-users to enhance and secure network infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Hold a current Active Secret clearance.
• Establish network specifications by analyzing workflow, access, information, and security requirements; design router administration, including interface configuration and routing protocols.
• Deploy, maintain, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot network routers, switches, and encryption devices in a Windows Active Directory environment.
• Evaluate network performance, including availability, utilization, throughput, and latency; plan and execute equipment selection, installation, configuration, and testing.
• Define network policies and procedures; establish connections and firewalls.
• Perform network monitoring, analysis, and performance tuning; troubleshoot network problems and escalate issues to vendors as needed.
• Secure the network by developing access controls, monitoring, and evaluation processes; maintain documentation.
• Design and conduct training programs for users; provide references and support.
• Upgrade network infrastructure by conferring with vendors; develop, test, evaluate, and install enhancements.
• Stay current with industry trends by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and engaging in professional networks.
• Protect organizational value by maintaining confidentiality of information.
• Interface with stakeholders, attend meetings, generate reports, and provide recommendations for network enhancements.

Requirements

• Active Secret clearance (required).
• 5-7 years of experience in network administration, including maintenance, upgrades, and familiarity with NIST Special Publications 800-37, 800-53, and 800-53A.
• Strong knowledge of networking protocols, including TCP/IP, VLANs, Ethernet, SONET, switching, routing (BGP/OSPF), 802.1Q, and DNS.
• Hands-on experience with enterprise network management and monitoring tools (e.g., CiscoWorks, NetView, InfoVista, NetCool, Riverbed, SecureCRT, Chimera, Schnozz).
• Experience configuring and troubleshooting network devices, including:
  • Cisco ASA 5500 Series firewalls.
  • Cisco 3000/4000/5000/6000 series routers and multilayer switches.
  • Juniper switches.
  • Cisco Unified IP Phones and VoIP systems.
  • Network encryption devices.
• Familiarity with wireless technologies and protocols (802.11 b/g/n) and authentication methods (EAP, PEAP, EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS).
• Experience with firewalls, Internet VPNs, remote implementation, and troubleshooting.
• Ability to set up and configure server hardware; familiarity with backup and recovery methodologies.
• Basic knowledge of networking components and operating systems in cloud environments, including UNIX and Microsoft.
• Expertise in security frameworks (ISO, NIST, COBIT, HIPAA/HITECH) and regulatory requirements is a plus.
• Strong technical aptitude and ability to research and resolve complex issues independently.
• Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Proven ability to develop technical documentation and system design artifacts.
• Experience working within structured schedules and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong customer service skills and professional demeanor.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline (required).
• IT I level certification in accordance with AR 25-2 (required).
• IAT II certification in accordance with DoD 8570.01-M (required).
• Juniper, Cisco, CWNA, or BCNE training (preferred).
• CCNA or CCNP certification (preferred).

Pay

USD $85,000.00 - USD $95,000.00 per year.

Security Clearance

Must be a U.S. Citizen. A high-level Department of Defense active security clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to government information.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods, typing, and reading from a computer screen. The candidate must have sufficient mobility, including bending, reaching, and kneeling, to complete daily duties efficiently. May require lifting up to thirty pounds as necessary.
