NeMLA Graduate Assistant (Lab Assistant/Tutoring)
Gannon University’s English Department seeks a graduate student to work as the NeMLA Graduate Assistant on projects related to the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA), a professional academic association focused on literatures, languages, and the interdisciplinary humanities.
About the role
The NeMLA Graduate Assistant supports NeMLA’s executive director and associate executive director on a variety of administrative tasks. As a student representative of both NeMLA and Gannon University, professionalism and integrity are expected at all times. This position helps develop career readiness competencies in career and self-development, communication, and professionalism.
The assistant will collaborate with supervising faculty member Dr. Derek DiMatteo, associate executive director of NeMLA and assistant professor of English at Gannon.
Responsibilities
- Prepare content for the newsletter (researching, writing, editing, and coordinating with contributors).
- Perform general office work (filing, printing, scanning, campus deliveries, organization, inventory).
- Assist with the annual convention (preparation, logistics, set-up/breakdown, operations, and possibly coordinating other staffers).
- Research and gather information to support executive decision-making (tracking and organizing documents, researching vendors or products).
- Facilitate communication between the association and its members, officers, or board of directors.
- Prepare documents and handle other special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be a Gannon University graduate student in good standing with a GPA above 3.2.
- Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written).
- Highly organized and disciplined with strong time-management.
- Attentive to details.
- Self-directed, independent, and able to follow instructions unsupervised.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external professionals.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneDrive).
- Reliable, honest, and in good academic standing with no prior academic integrity violations; must adhere to strict confidentiality policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Social media management experience.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Intermediate or advanced proficiency in non-English languages (Portuguese, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Hindi).
- Experience with HTML & CSS, WordPress, or other CMS backend administration.
Physical Demands
- Ability to bend, lift, push, and pull to assist with moving boxes and supplies in the Palumbo Academic Center.
- May lift up to 30–50 pounds (e.g., boxed or bagged items).
- May transport items across campus or load items into a vehicle (e.g., using a dolly or hand truck).
- May travel to convention locations in other cities to assist with set-up and breakdown of posters, projectors, tables, etc.
Schedule
- Part-time, 9-month position (academic year).
- 10 hours per week, with office hours based on the candidate’s schedule.
- First-shift schedule.
