About the role
UW Formula Electric builds a new race car every year. It’s a highly engaging design project where you’ll learn to design real solutions to real problems on a real car. You’ll build, test, iterate, and develop technical skills comparable to 4th-year co-op terms, with the freedom to innovate that typically comes years after graduation.
There’s something for everyone—it isn’t just engineering. Sponsorship, marketing, and operations are all handled by the team. No matter your background, there’s room for your skills and opportunities to learn new ones.
The biggest lessons may not be about the race car. You’ll build something on time, on a budget, with a team, while managing a university degree and possibly co-op. You’ll learn to communicate effectively, manage time and resources, pitch ideas to sponsors, make decisions with limited information, and research areas with little existing data—all directly applicable to the real world.
The race car itself is worth it: it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.5s, represents UWaterloo at Formula SAE events across North America, and can handle 2G laterally. It’s likely the most rewarding thing you’ll do in university, forging lifelong friendships while creating something that represents your university internationally.

- Communicate openly about progress, challenges, or workload—whether you’re stuck, overcommitted, or need more tasks.
- Ask questions and continuously learn, regardless of your experience level.
Requirements

- Commitment to the team’s success and your own growth.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
