Orion has an immediate opening for a Crane Operator in Southern Louisiana to support field operations at marine project locations for Orion Marine Construction Gulf Coast.

About the role

Incumbents are responsible for the operation of cranes and other hoisting equipment in the construction or repair of marine terminals and dock facilities. The role involves close collaboration with the Project Superintendent, Barge Foreman, Welders, Boat Captain, Laborers, and other skilled or semi-skilled crafts persons. The incumbent must support Orion’s guiding beliefs and core values centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, with Integrity as the foundation.

Responsibilities

• Work as assigned by the Barge Foreman to ensure the successful completion of marine construction projects.
• Assist in unloading and assembling cranes or other hoisting equipment for marine construction activities.
• Utilize basic skills as a hook operator, including swinging rigs, raising and lowering crane booms, and managing load lines.
• Operate hydraulic rubber tire or track cranes equipped with multiple-part pick-up or single-line hoists suspended from a boom by cable.
• Maneuver and position loads over designated areas in a smooth, safe manner.
• Move hand levers and depress pedals to rotate the chassis over lift load points.
• Use load charts to determine load and radius capabilities of the crane.
• Assist in the installation of boom and hoisting cables on hoisting equipment.
• Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, oiling, and fueling assigned equipment.
• Conduct daily safety inspections of cranes and identify potential issues (e.g., worn cables, broken gears, or damaged housing).
• Ensure the crane boom is properly secured on the work barge before moving to a new location and demonstrate safe work practices.
• Collaborate with the Barge Foreman, Welders, Helpers, Laborers, and other skilled craft persons to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to comply with State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

Requirements

• A minimum of two (2) years of crane operations experience on land and on barges, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Understand the basic functions and operations of various pile hammers (diesel, air, hydraulic, and drop hammers).
• Ability to read, understand, and use crane load charts to determine load and radius capabilities.
• General knowledge of construction rigging, including the use of slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, and multi-part load blocks.
• Capable of passing a crane operations certification test.

• Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed by Safety Representatives or management.
• Capable of evacuating the work area promptly in an emergency.
• Ability to walk, step, climb, or move between locations on job sites, including getting on/off work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights.
• Visual acuity (natural or corrected) to observe crane operations.
• Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for long periods.
• Perform repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
• Climb vertical ladders up to 40’–50’ in height.
• Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
• Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Adapt to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure.
