Navigation Analyst

On-siteBusiness Development$100k/yrFull-time

About the role

We are seeking a Navigation Analyst to help us pursue innovative solutions to the timely and timeless maritime navigation problem. As part of our team, you will become a Subject Matter Expert on the mathematical theory and physics behind cutting-edge navigation systems operating in extremely demanding conditions, supporting the most crucial missions of the US military. You will apply this knowledge to model errors in various navigation systems, assess their impact on tactical and strategic mission objectives, and investigate methods to mitigate their influence. You will join a highly talented and motivated team of mathematicians, engineers, and physicists focused on navigation error analysis, with opportunities to collaborate with experts from diverse technical fields.

Responsibilities

  • Master the mathematical models governing the performance of the most accurate inertial navigation systems in the US Navy surface and subsurface fleet.
  • Derive physics-based models for how supporting aids to the navigation system interact and influence the inertial system.
  • Implement mathematical and physics-based models in software applications to analyze the performance of inertial navigation systems and supporting aids.
  • Assess the fidelity of the navigation systems being studied and communicate conclusions and recommendations to decision-makers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a similar technical field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience developing and using mathematical or physics-based models to analyze complex systems.
  • Experience with Kalman filters and/or modern system estimation methods.
  • Experience with a high-level programming language like MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills for documenting and presenting work to APL colleagues and government sponsors.
  • Ability to solve challenging technical problems through both independent investigation and collaborative team effort.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to US Navy facilities, bases, and contractor sites to present results.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately a Top Secret level clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a similar technical field.
  • Experience modeling navigation sensors including IMUs, GPS, and navigational sonars (Doppler Velocity Log, Correlation Velocity Log).
  • Specific experience with accuracy performance analysis for maritime navigation or missile systems.
  • Experience with DoD test and evaluation programs.
  • Familiarity with submarine operations.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance.
