Naval Architect.

This position is being filled under the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce. U.S. Citizenship is required. A 1-year probationary period is required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design and development of hull forms and vessel arrangements.
• Perform studies, develop calculations, and assist with preparing design plans for vessel structure including hull scantlings, superstructure, deckhouse, and foundations.
• Develop calculations and designs using established criteria, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
• Perform basic design of ships involving combinations of the following areas: hull form, displacement, stability, general arrangements, weight, trim, speed, power, and endurance.
• Prepare weight estimates and perform calculations to determine the stability of new or altered vessels.
• Develop tank capacity requirements and plans for fuel oil, fresh water, lube oil, and ballast tanks.
• Review naval architecture/marine engineering designs prepared by architect-engineer firms and shipyards.
• Evaluate the adequacy and practicability of layout, equipment, or system design, as well as their suitability and compliance with the intended function, contract plans, and specifications.
• Consult with shipyard contractor personnel to resolve unforeseen technical problems during construction.
• Coordinate, monitor, and report progress of engineering and design for assigned projects.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirement for Naval Architect:

• Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in engineering. The program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); OR (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:
  • statics, dynamics;
  • strength of materials (stress-strain relationships);
  • fluid mechanics, hydraulics;
  • thermodynamics;
  • electrical fields and circuits;
  • nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and
  • any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
• Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
  • Professional registration or licensure – Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Written Test – Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
  • Specified academic courses – Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences.
  • Related curriculum – Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, with at least 1 year of professional engineering experience.

In Addition to the Basic Requirement:

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
  • Reviewing structural engineering plans for compliance with established specifications;
  • Performing onsite construction inspections to determine compliance with contract plans and specifications and to identify and resolve problems;
  • Preparing weight estimates and performing calculations to determine stability of structures;
  • Performing basic design of ships involving combinations of hull form, displacement, stability, general arrangements, weight, trim, speed, power, and endurance.
• Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as engineering.
• Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successful completion of all requirements for a bachelor's degree with SAA, based on:
  • Class standing (upper third of graduating class);
  • Grade-point average (3.0 or higher out of 4.0 overall, or 3.5 or higher in the major field); or
  • Honor society membership (one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies).
• 5-Year Engineering Program: Successful completion of a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering in an ABET-accredited college or university.
• Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

Foreign Education: If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program.
