Naturalist/First Mate - St Andrews

Compensation: $18.50 USD hourly

About the role

Boat Naturalists educate, inform, and monitor all passengers during 90-minute boat tours, presenting information on marine mammals, birds, and general ecology. The Naturalist also serves as the acting First Mate on the vessel, assisting the Captain as needed. Pre- and post-trip boat cleaning is required, and some hours may involve working at the cash register.

Responsibilities

• Perform duties as First Mate to the Captain, including delivering the safety talk prior to departure.
• Educate and inform guests about Everglades Park history, including crocodiles, manatees, and a variety of birds.
• Monitor all passengers to ensure their comfort and safety.
• Clean and prepare the vessel before and after trips.
• Continue learning new material on marine mammals, birds, and the Flamingo area.

Requirements

• Partial high school education; high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent preferred.
• Strong customer service abilities and a proactive approach to assisting customers and coworkers.
• People-oriented with strong communication and public speaking skills; education experience or background is a plus.
• Strong work ethic and team-oriented mindset.
• Enjoy educating diverse audiences about wildlife and related subjects.
• Must adhere to company dress code.
• Subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing.
• Available to work Saturdays, Sundays, evenings, and holidays.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Florida Boaters Safety Course certification.
• Background in natural sciences preferred.
• Working knowledge of boats and experience working on open water.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, including frequent movements within the unit.
• Frequent bending, lifting, carrying, reaching, or extending arms and hands above shoulder height in a constantly changing environment.
• Reading and writing work-related documents in English.
• Clear speech recognition and communication in English to interact with customers and coworkers.
• Physical presence at the job site is essential to perform duties.
