About the role

Established in 1970, Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System, with seven locations across several counties, including Brunswick, Charlotte, Nottoway, Mecklenburg, Greensville, and Halifax. SVCC serves the largest community college region in the state, covering ten counties and one city. SVCC is located in a beautiful rural region renowned for its rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland, and is home to two popular lakes: Gaston and Kerr. We offer a welcoming learning environment and are accredited to award associate degrees. The college offers a diverse range of programs, including developmental studies, academic, technical, and lifelong education. SVCC empowers students to build skills, knowledge, and leadership, preparing them to thrive in a changing society.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and teach courses using approved syllabi, student learning outcomes, and current best practices in pedagogy.
  • Maintain a positive classroom or virtual climate conducive to student learning.
  • Lead hands-on lab experiments, strictly maintaining laboratory safety protocols, guiding students through scientific data collection, and fostering critical scientific inquiry.
  • Competently utilize instructional technologies, including the college’s Learning Management System (Canvas), for grading, course announcements, and virtual teaching components.
  • Review, grade, and return student assignments, laboratory reports, and exams in a timely manner. Provide regular academic feedback to assist student growth.
  • Be accessible to students for brief academic guidance, questions, or clarification before/after face-to-face sessions or via scheduled virtual office hours.
  • Follow academic policies outlined in the SVCC Adjunct Faculty Handbook, submit final course grades by college deadlines, and report student enrollment or attendance issues as required.

Qualifications

  • Education (For Biology, A&P, and Microbiology): A Master’s degree in Biology or a related biomedical science field is required, with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the speciality science.
  • Education (For General Chemistry): A Master’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related chemical science field is required, containing a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in pure chemistry.
  • Education (For Physics): A Master’s degree in Physics or a related physical science/engineering field is required, containing a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in pure physics.
  • Demonstrated teaching competence and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams.
  • Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
  • Ability to implement current pedagogical strategies and technical learning platforms effectively.

Additional Considerations

  • Previous science teaching experience at the community college or university level, specifically with face-to-face and online/hybrid modalities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or teaching a fully online, asynchronous laboratory courses.
  • Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
