About the role
The National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate has multiple openings for continuing undergraduate students in engineering, physics, and computer science fields. Successful candidates will gain practical research experience while providing technical and/or research support to projects in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computational engineering, nuclear and chemical engineering, or related fields. NSED delivers engineering solutions for national defense, space, homeland security, energy, environment, and fundamental physics challenges.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical and/or research assignments in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computational engineering, nuclear and chemical engineering, or related fields, working directly with engineers, scientists, and technical mentors.
- Participate in research under close supervision.
- Gather and analyze data or information in support of scientific research.
- Utilize standard software packages common in your discipline to complete tasks.
- Attend relevant seminars and facility tours.
- Conduct research and present concepts, ideas, and results through technical presentations and/or poster sessions.
- Communicate results to the research group.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
- Must be a college or university student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited institution pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or a related field.
- A sustained record of outstanding academic performance.
- Ability to work full time for ten to twelve weeks during your internship.
- Ability to apply basic engineering or scientific principles to solve technical problems.
- Communication skills necessary to document work, present research projects, and deliver technical talks/presentations.
- Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas effectively.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
- Experience working with computers and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Qualifications We Desire
- GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Technical project experience.
- Familiarity with tools associated with your field of study.
Pay
$23.26 - $31.62 hourly for the 705.1 level. This position follows a step structure, with placement determined by your most recent completed academic year.

Additional Information
Security clearance is not required. However, if your assignment exceeds 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must undergo the Personal Identity Verification process, including an online background investigation and approval.
The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Section 3112, restricts access to specific non-public areas of national security or nuclear weapons facilities for citizens of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea without dual U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residence. Compliance with Section 3112 is required for this position.
